I have been totally engrossed in trying to make some startegy for teaching English language work with my group of students. Mostly boys , and in their third year of O level study they have a misconception that they know the language, that writing an essay is easy that spellings are no problem that its simple just to copy from the board whatever the teacher writes, well , teaching English as a second language is becoming a trying job.Perhaps its the will to learn that is lessening day by day, that is the question?
to learn or not to learn
for one can earn
without a degree
Is education losing its value? or is it the fear of violence in the learning centres?
I guess the love of learning is slipping away because Teaching methods are becoming stale. With all the technology , training is not as fast as the media.
Teaching needs to be like the martial arts, eh? an army of teachers armed with Orders and drills.
and Discipline and control- lets have schools where learning can be made fun and active-
I hope the Controlled Project of Learning English that I have started with my batch of twenty odd ones works out and we have some good outcome.
Meantime English the Global Language now is mixing up more and more with the first language of most people.Would English remain standard? Going back to teaching after two years I find that my English vocabulary needsbrushing up so I have started playing Scrabble , this has done some good, and Hats Off to gather.com.....Thanks Gather for lifting my spirits and giving me the boundless opportunity to write to my hearts content.

When I was teaching ESL I did use Scrabble and other word games to teach the kids. We used the daily newspapers for a lot of projects, including new vocabulary and to spark current event conversations. I am pretty good at making up games that will help them pick up new vocabulary. That's what you have to do to keep them interested.
And you are right. Even as teachers we must constantly keep up with new vocabulary. I am a native English speaker and I run across new words every day. We cannot sit back and assume that we know it all. We must show our students that learning never stops. It continues every day of our lives.
It's not 100% effective unless this sort of practise is supplemented by actual speaking, but if your students are complete hermits with lots of time on their hands, it may be of some use.
