Christmas Stockings

Hi,

Years back, I bought some quilted Christmas material and hand-sewed HUGE stockings out of it. I used (believe it or not, something my Mom told me would last, instead of regular thread), I used Dental Floss. They've lasted - we've filled them over and over again. When they're not full, they look great just hanging on the wall or wherever you want to hang them. Takes a lot to fill them though,  but it's a fun and easy craft.

I've made a few so far and will probably make more. If you want, and make them large enough like I did, you can actually fit ALL of a persons gifts in one! Send them home with the stocking and I bet they bring it back for the following year :)

Do you still give/fill or receive stockings? And if you do, this is a fun way to make one and easily as well. If you're using a sewing maching, most can take the dental floss as it's not really that thick, it's just very strong.

Ok, stocking fillers/givers and receivers, who are you? Also, stocking makers?

I made the kids stockings last year out of flannel material, and really liked them. I usually just stick some small dollar store toys or coloring books in each one, a candy cane, a handful of candy, and an orange or an apple. This year, they'll each be getting a gift card in their stockings, as well. :)
I love the gift card idea, Heather, then they can pick out things that they want :)

My mom never put toys or candy in our stockings. She always put nuts and fruit in it. There was always tons of presents under the tree for us though, so I'm not complaining.

Dental floss probably makes them smell minty too :)
We usally fill our stockings with each individual tastes we each have our own candy favorites...The kids get little toys handheld games,colognes,Its different each year..

When my kids were little, I bought quilted pre-made stockings with a Cross stitch section at the top. I cross stitched their names and various pictures I found in books. My children are 16, 17, and 20 and these stockings are still a highlight of their morning since they can get them while we are waiting for everyone to wake up or come home from working night shifts. Inside, they find candy, gift cards, freebie cds or various other items I may have collected, this year a Barnes and Noble gift card will be in each, cologne, make-up, or whatever small items I can find. I also have two grand daughters that I am raising, so they get small toys in their stockings. McDonald toys that I have picked up, Dollar Tree stuff, maybe cute socks, etc.

I have always tried to fill stockings, but not huge ones. I have a nice large one now that I either found at a yard sale or was given. I can't remember becasue it was last year. My best friend has a huge stocking that she hangs on her wall and fills with items from the dollar store so that way she has gifts for anyone who shows up at her house on Christmas day. Most people end up with two or three gifts. I thought about doing that for my husband's family this year as we found out that no one drew names for Christmas and we can't afford to go buy everyone gifts.

My mom hangs stockings for us that she puts a few scratch-off instant win lottery tickets in for us each year. My dad and stepmom have rather large store-bought stockings that they use for us and usually fit all our gifts in it. We don't have a fireplace in our current house but eventually I'd like to sew stockings for the boy, the kitties and I.

I have had a Christmas stocking every year since I was kid:) It's a tradition for everyone to in our house(all three of us) to hang our stockings on Christmas Eve and find them filled by Santa in the morning! Christmas really brings out the kid in me!!

My children are 15,16,and 17 and I still do stockings for them, stockings are also done for my husband and myself. When the kids were younger we filled each others, but as they got older and learned the "truth of santa" the kids begin filling ours as well. Stockings are one of our favorite parts of the holidays, its fun to find unique little gifts and to see what interesting tidbit is in each stocking.

We have matching ones and each one has the person's name on the top. Every Christmas Eve, we empty the stockings and save the presents under the tree for Christmas morning.
Kerry! Yippee for stockings for us too - I love the things, there's something about a stocking that's just ... Christmasy! I'd put the gifts in the stockings if I have to choose whether do put them under the tree or in a stocking anyday.

If any of you sign up for Freebies during the year, save the cosmetics, etc's and fill a stocking with them. You'll either have a REALLY cool stocking for someone or a lot of things to hand out for unexpected guests!

We have always done stockings. Every year, I would get a tangelo in the toe of my stocking, a tube of chapstick and a toothbrush. When I was little, I would get a coloring book and a 24 pack of crayons rolled into it, and when I was older, I would get a magazien and some fancy pens as well as Bonne Bell Lip Smackers and of course, the tangelo and toothbrush.

I usually do the scratch off tickets in the mini stockings for my parents.

When I had the fur babies, Tasha and Beth always got a stocking each that says, "Santa loves Kitties too" and it was filled with Pounce and a few cans of gourmet cat food. Every year, they would get stuffed mini mousies and many many milk jug rings. (We had everyone save them!!!)

Dental floss? The mint kind I hope! How do you string it? I know how to bead with it but you must be so adept at crafts to be able to pull that off. Kudos my dear!
LOL, Not at all, amanda, I use a yarn needle! Big hole for the floss to go through and it still sews great :)

roxanne! OMG, one of our fur-babys, Stretch, LOVES those milk thingys, they're his favorite toy! The other one, Little Miss, could care less, she wants her organic catnip :) Of "course" little gifts for the fur-family, they're family too!

We still do stockings for the two younger girls. Tristan is married and has her stocking at her house now. I have tried convincing the girls that we should get rid of the stockings because I could buy them each another gift with what I put in there, but they insist that the stocking is the BEST part of Christmas morning. Go Figure.
I love the stockings too - great tradition and there's nothing like seeing a filled stocking on Christmas morning!
I am never getting too old for stockings! LOL

My Mom had a friend of hers sew us stockings when we were children. When my children came along she had stockings made for them as well. It is a great keep sake .

I think I could totally do this. I have a tote bag full of gifts for my main recipient already, so I could make a humongous stocking (how about out of burlap?) and double the gifts. I had the crazy idea one year of making and selling pet beds, but I never actually made one. Guess I'd better start getting ambitious, now that we'll be having a lot of indoor time, with the weather getting cooler. Knit 'em if you got 'em!

Did you hand sew with the dental floss or use it in your machine? I've used it for hand sewing but not in the machine as I was always leery of it 'gumming up the works'.
