I am from Love's beat
Life's journey of joy.
Two lovers on this trip,
Caught up in the world.
Given their best,
I made them proud.
Two people determined
To give all their love,
Devoted to their girls
and each other.
This is a song
for Ruth and Dan.

Ruth (1913-2002) and Dan (1916-2003)

And a happy thanksgiving to you and yours!
Many blessings to you girlfriend!
David, aren't they stylish? Dig the white shoes!
And... Happy Thanksgiving!
And I love looking at old photographs, reading them and also imagining what life was like for the people depicted. I'd say that your mother firmly but fairly ruled the household, and that your dad was always someone you and Kath could go to for a hug, comfort and understanding - he was the softie! Each supported you in their own way. As they did each other. It comes as no surprise to me that they passed away within a year of each other.
If only I could sing the same song about about my parents but, alas, I cannot. I've just finished writing the second draft of a prose follow-up to my recent Holyoake article, but it's such a bleak looking back on my childhood that I don't know whether I'll publish it.
Yet reading your poem and Kathleen's comment, I do appreciate how blessed you all have been as a family. And just as you are proud of them, so they are of you.
It is certain that you will all meet again - it is written in the stars. Trust me, it is so.
Joy, also for your thoughtful words.
Serina, I made you misty-eyed? Wow!
Magi, you have powers beyond belief, and you are spot on as to who ruled the roost and who was the softie. I was privileged to have such sweeties for parents. And my father was so bereft after Mother left us that he lost all will to live and was gone within six months of her.
Carolyn, thank you for your kind words. I only wish my love life had been as successful as their lifelong devotion.
Donna, you are welcome, they were very sweet people.
Lisa, they've gone to their heavenly reward now, but I think I did okay by them!
John, it's a thrill to have you read my efforts, thank you for the kind words.
This is a piece that I can't believe I didn't get around to reading. I had much on my plate when you first posted it, so I may have been a good deal distracted; no, I WAS a good deal distracted. LOL!
In any case, I'm am so glad I finally got to it. You say sooooo much in so few words with this tribute to your parents. I can tell just how "special" these two people are in your life and the positive impact they had with you. We should all be as lucky as you in this regard.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this poem and share your deep seeded feelings with us. As always - simply great writing.
Kathryn, thank you again for returning.
A gorgeous poem and a fine tribute. Congratulations on being featured.
Just so everyone knows....You can write more than one WIAF piece and do so in any number of styles/formats. I encourage you and everyone else, to explore the possibilities and use your best creative hand, in expressing this VERY important topic.
Our Gather community can only be improved and enriched by this simple exercise.
I'm new to Gather - but must tell you that if your's is an example of the beauty and talent that gathers here, I am hooked. Ruth and Dan must have been extraordinary people - and so proud of you!
Tom H
Barbary, coming from you I am grateful, as this was early in my poetry exploration.
Tom, I appreciate your stopping by. I see you are a FOD....friend of David. Welcome to Gather and I will visit your spot.
FOD? LOL! Well, my dear, that's certainly FODder for thought, I guess.
In my more recent airline experience (15 years of it), it meant the same thing. Nothing worse than picking-up some FOD while taxing on the ramp. Low-life rampers! ;) LOL!
Could I get you (when you have time) to change the title (edit) to:
"Where I Am From - Faith H."
Thanks darlin'!
