I can hardly believe the tirade of obscenities and racial wrath that spewed from the mouth of Michael Richards recently. The man known best from Sienfeld lost it when a member of the audience heckled him.
I can understand him getting upset perhaps, although a long-time comedian like him has likely faced this often over the course of his career. However, he definitely crossed over the line of professionalism and decency when he used the "N" word several times.
I find it rather interesting that even the special on Katrina Relief hosted by Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal was full of profanity – so much so that it was difficult to understand any of the jokes as so much was bleeped out.
My question is this: Is all this use of profanity necessary to tell a joke any more?
I don’t think so.
