The Day I Almost Burnt My Grandma's House Down

I was staying at my grandma's house while she was away visiting my Uncle for a month.  I started heating up the burner on the stove top to heat up something for dinner.  I went in to the living room for a couple minutes to watch tv and I started to hear a wierd crackling sound.  I went back to the kitchen to investigate and found I had left a pan full of grease on the stove and it was on fire!!!  The flames were almost 2 feet high!!!!  I threw some baking soda on it first, which didn't do much, so I then threw water on it and that pretty much did the trick.  There was grease splattered everywhere, (what a mess), so I cleaned it up.  There was so much smoke I had to open every window in the house and then opened the front door to get out of there, the smoke was so thick I couldn't stand it.  Well, I thought to myself, I put the fire out and cleaned up the mess and no one will ever know, (wrong)!  As I walked out the front door my dad and his wife came riding their bicycles up to the door.  Busted!!!  I had to tell them what happened then, since the house was still full of smoke.  I found out you shouldn't put out a grease fire with water.  It did make a mess and I did cover up the pan, which is what you're supposed to do I guess, there was no fire extinguisher and I had to think fast. The flames were so high I was a little panicky.  I now can see why people die from smoke inhalation before a fire ever gets to them.  The important thing was I put the fire out and no one was hurt.  My dad and his wife were amused and I didn't tell my grandma about this incident till a long time later.
