Nell's Old Fashioned Rye Bread

Yield: 1 loaf

3 c orn meal
1 ts salt
1/2 c molasses
1 c boiling milk
1 ts butter softened
1 1/2 c cold buttermilk
4 c rye flour
2 ts baking soda
1/2 c mashed Irish potatoes
Raisins if desired
Butter as required

Preheat oven to 375 deg-F.
Grease an 8" round pan.
Mix corn meal, salt & molasses in large bowl.
Pour boiling milk over corn meal mixture.
Use another bowl to mix cold buttermilk with rye flour & baking soda.
Mix buttermilk mixture into corn meal mixture.
Add potatoes & if you wish raisins.
Knead in bowl until firm, then
Place in greased pan.
Place shallow pan of water in bottom of oven & cover lightly with tinfoil, to help reduce browning.
Bake without rising at for 2 about hrs.
Rub with butter when done then cover with a towel to retain moisture.
Serve sliced as you wish.

Donald - Just reading about it makes my stomach grumble and mouth water! I made a copy of the recipe and will try it out soon. Thanks for sharing this one.
