I don't know how many of you folk are star gazers like myself, but I love a good meteor shower and the Leonid meteor shower is one of the better ones!
This saturday night, starting after 10:00pm for peak viewing, you can expect to see meteor striking the atmosphere (or shooting stars as some like to call them) at a rate of between 10 and 20 meteors per hour.
This meteor shower is easily viewable with the naked eye. The only concern for us, is if the weather will hold up. Just now I poked my head outside, and the skies over Salem were wonderfully clear and the stars were beautifull.
The comet: Tempel-Tuttle which causes this meteor shower blasted through our area of the great nothing almost 9 years ago. Generally speaking, the Earth passing through the trail left behind by comets causes a good deal of our meteor showers, but the more time that has passed lessens the frequency of meteors. In this case, even after all this time, we can still expect a terrific show.
Enjoy!
