What does a good year for deer hunting mean for Minnesota?

According to a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources press release, the 2006 deer harvest likely to rank among state's top five. Right now estimates predict the number of deer taken will exceed 250,000. I must spend too much time in the city, because that sounds like an incredible number.

What does a good year for deer hunting mean for Minnesota? How does hunting benefit Minnesota? Are hunters filling an important function to keep the population down or is it a death sport?

Fewer 300 pound pests. I think everyone should get a doe perimit with their buck permit. There are too many of them.

Fewer car accidents, humans lives saved.

hahaha...nice Gary. My father in law went up to his cabin in the Ely area on the friday before the opener. And what happened?? He hit a deer. We all had a laugh at that after he was there for a week and didn't even see one, let alone shoot one. But yeah, population control is a good one. Especially up north where they are literaly everywhere.

Gary, I know several people who live north of the cities that consider deer oversized rabbits/rodents, especially if they have large gardens or farms.

Haven't had that Michael. Will you be hunting or will you get some from a hunter?

Nathan I take it your FIL is a-ok. Guessing the deer didn't make it and the car looks worse for wear.

It is funny how population changes. Driving through southern Illinois and western Kentucky earlier this year I was shocked at how common coyote and fox are...but I didn't spot any deer.

Yeah FIL is fine. Truck was damaged but not horrible and the deer is MIA. He tried to find it it kill it as it had to be mortaly hurt but to no avail.
