How Many Groups Are "Too Many"?

I currently belong to 98 groups. This amazes me, and at the same time, I know it is just because I am so darned interested in so many topics. I wish I had a way to sort them into catagories like "Free to post anything", and then special ones like "Genealogy", etc.. I only "own" three: Fibromyalgia: When you just need to talk about it ;  Grandfather Stories  and Grandmother Stories .

It may be that I will eventually pare my list down if I find that I am not participating much in a group. So, if you invite me and I don't accept, it is nothing personal, honest!

Maybe we need more quality groups and less quantity? (No, that doesn't mean I don't like anyone's group!). Just less of the same kind?

No, we just need to be able to sort our groups the way we want them to appear to us.

Currently, the groups seem to pop up in random order for selection whenever I publish an article. It is annoying as all get-out to then have to scroll through them all to find the proper ones to check. Ohj.

I was just thinking today how much easier it would be to post articles if I could put my groups in some kind of order-even like we do with desk top icons. It is hard to scan them all to see which ones to check when posting.

We must have all been on the same vibe. Its so hard to keep up especially since gather should put what the group is about. I have short term memory loss and it isnt so fun when the moderators get angry for posting the wrong things. I posted an Amber alert to everyone today and got yelled at by a few groups but that also helped me to decide to get rid of those who didnt want my article. I was just trying to help spread the word of an extremely important topic and figured any one would accept them but nope.I also got an email today from 2 people...well if this person is in this group then i wont be your friend or in your group....I said bye to both because I have no room in my life for that....sorry rambling but good article

I would like to see several groups combined, but most people probably wouldn't combine their group with others.

I too would like to have a system in place for grouping the groups in which I'm a member by categories.

I also would like to have the groups I own at the top of the list, this way when I need to accept or reject an article I don't have to search every page to find it.
The groups never appear in the same order, so I never know where I will find them!!!

i would like groups to be categorized, too. someone always puts out a replicating group and then blah blah...

sonia - when you click on my groups, there's a little popdown screen and you can choose the groups you own. MUCH improved on the last edition of gather!!

i am in way too many groups. i just can't help myself. but i can't keep track (even of the ones i own, gasp! shame!)

I agree, I wish there was to simplify my groups to a shorter thing like just showing the group Icon and name ,and could catagorize them in ones I publish to and ones I just read. I belong to way more groups than my eyes can handle .But they are interesting.I have 39 sitting in my invite box its just easyier for me to go there and click on one to read the content..hey Thats the way it should be shown nice neat and compact so you can view alot at one time....

I agree with hoping that there will be a way to categorize groups. I know that there are times when I go to post an article that I am not always sure which is which, so I accidentally post to the wrong ones, or don't post to ones where they actually belong, and I have the same problems finding the ones that I am looking forward to reading.

I don't like to belong to so many groups that I can't hope to keep up with all the articles that come my way. I own only one group - Memorable Times- that I intended for both personal memories and historical topics, but when I looked last, there are only three of us. I haven't promoted it because I saw only one other group covering the subject that I thought would cover what a lot of older folks would be writing about or might like to read. I was wrong.

I've been sorting out my groups and it's a tough call when I belong to so many of the same theme to pick and choose what to keep and what to let go. I agree we need sorting system of some kind.

I am happy to know it isn't just me having organizational challenges in Gather. I would like to be able to find my people faster too. Like in a drop down menu instead of having to go through the whole list. I can usually find my friends faster in the Subscription section than in People. Oh well, I want world peace too... :)

I wish I could arrange my groups in some kind of order. Like alphabetical would be really nice, or if you could plop them down any way you want, would also be nice. I also have so many that when I post an article, I might miss a group. I believe they are arranged in the order that you joined them.

People have been asking for a way to organize their groups for as long as I can remember.
I would also like to see a link on the Gather home page to a list of groups by category too. Then you would know what exists in here to join, as well as not to start duplicate groups in error.

AHA! thank you for the tip Jessie!

John, it would be nice if when you first start a group there would be an option (like in Yahoo) where you can click on to choose the category in which you want your group to be found. This way, since there are soooo many new groups added on a daily basis, at least from the GitGo, the owner can determine where their group should be

Am I rambling or did I explain it coherently....? LOL


Group categories could be:
ABOUT GROUPS
FOOD & COOKING
POLITICS
RELIGION
COLLECTING
POETRY
FICTION
MEMORIES
ANYTHING GROUPS (for all of the groups mentioned above to which this article was posted)

....and so forth!

Are you counting just Gather Groups or all net groups together?

Carolyn, if you're asking me, my answer is all my Gather groups only on this site. I already have my groups organized the way I want/need them in Yahoo
