From Minnesota Public Radio's Midmorning Success and sustainability :
Aveda manufactures cosmetics and says it has a mission to improve the environment. In the next Leadership series conversation, Aveda's president talks about why finding the right sources for products poses a huge challenge.
Guest Dominique Conseil: President of Aveda, based in Blaine.
Conseil has an interesting background and basically is an interesting person. Know any other CEOs who tried products on themselves instead of testing on animals? Check out his thoughts on sustainability and how embracing it is important to a corporations relationship with employees as well as customers.

It's getting easier to find these products that are "responsible" and businesses and the public have to educate themselves on the choices. Voting with your dollars tends to have a big impact in this country.
I found the show interesting in that the parent companies of these smaller, "responsible" companies are careful to avoid brand recognition between their mega-cos and these niche companies. Aren't consumers wise to that?! I guess not. When I think of Aveda, I don't see Estee Lauder, I still think of Horst even though his affiliation is long gone.
You do "vote" with your dollars, and the marketplace will determine it.
