The amusement park, shut down since 1966.
Lake Shawnee is the site of a Native American burial ground and the Clay family massacre, where the family of Mitchell and Phoebe Clay,
the first white settlers in Mercer County, were attacked by Indians. Two of their children were killed during the attack and another, 16-year-old Ezekiel, captured. Ezekiel was taken to Ohio, where he was burned at the stake.
The land was bought by someone else, he thought what a wonderful spot for a amusement park.
The ferris wheel had vines grown up it. The mechanical swings old an rotten. The concession stand still there as well. The lake was used for fishing, swimming and boating. The amusement park was in operation from the 1920s to the 1960s.
The first tragic accident was that of a lil girl on the mechanical swings. A soda pop truck was backing out from one of the stands. The lil girl came around on the swings and smacked right into the truck
The second was a boy drowned in the lake. Right after that in 1966, the owner closed it down.
They say you can hear children laughing. They showed one swing moving all by itself. If it had been from a wind, more than one swing would
have been moving....
I did a quick internet search for some photos. And found this very good site on the amusement park, full of photos.
