The most important things on every website: are the little linked words at the bottom (or sides) of pages. The ones that say: about, contact, join, Terms of Service, Privacy Policy; and whatever other small letter words you might find in obscure places.
These links are the passages to the windows of understandings on what type of outfit is running things and how their game is playing.
BE WARY !
If a website doesn't have these things, keep your armor on, your weapons ready and your loved ones hidden.
In case you haven't read the "about" page on Gather, I urge that you should. It's the kind of welcome mat I like to see gracing the door on a place that I frequent.
Although it should be at the bottom of this page, here's a handier link that should open in a new window (About Gather )
I love the picture Tom paints of Gather in his opening paragraphs. I'm not going to quote or paraphrase. I'm urging you to go and read it (after you finsih reading my piece).
The best, new and intersting thing I learned about Tom Gerace is that he has a BFA in Social Studies. My self-taught cultural anthropologist is smiling.
I also liked hearing about a bunch of people I'd not heard about before who make Gather happen. My un-ending thanks go out to all of them, for all that they've done and all that they do. The list was Interestingly Impressive.
Did you know that Gather won an award?
In 2005, The Massachusetts Inovation and Technology Exchange: MITX (my-techs) awarded Gather in the category of Media/Portal . The list of other winners and the list of sponsors are both impressive. Although Gather was selected as a finalist, they did not win any MITX awards this year. (Sorry, Gather.)
Which leads me to close with a finger pointing at the press release list; which I'll probably be mining for fun later.
I'm just giddy.
Peace -

Ok, ok, I gotsta go a check it out - now see what you've done! I'm off my Gather-a-minute-try-and-read-everything-possible-in-30-seconds-Friday-night-ritual.
Giddy! Hmph!
I just right click whenever I'm curious about a new site or the people who run the place (and I seem to have developed a level of ummm, skepticism, let's say), and all I need to is high-lite the person or site's name, right-click and select the option from google's search bar "search web on ____" option. I have it set so it opens a tab in the background so as not to disturb me until I'm ready.
As I mentioned, I'm somewhat paranoid, umm, skeptical I mean, so, often I'll end up with quite a few of these searches opened in tabs waiting behind the one I'm currently perusing. LOL.
Lovely extension.
I run searches/research on any new sites just about, any that I'm thinking of joining that is.
Paranoid, yeah, that's probably more like it!
I'm glad that you brought this up, as I haven't perused these areas in quite some time. However, I wish Gather would update them periodically (beyond the press releases), as some of the information is out of date, and inaccurate.
I love your curiosity and powers of observation!
Been on the internet since 1996, owning online stores, family and community websites, etc.
Do a lot of online shopping, and ALWAYS, whenever shopping, check out the "About Us" or "Contact Us" page. I always try to shop online stores that are located within the Good Ole USA! Don't feel secure giving my credit card number to a site located outside the U.S.
Thanks for pointing out "Gather's" stellar "About Us" Page!
