The day after Thanksgiving is frequently referred to as "Black Friday". One of the major U.S. holiday shopping days, it is the day many U.S. consumers begin their annual Christmas shopping. The day is heavily promoted by retailers both in newspapers and with television commercials. The origin of the term "Black Friday" comes from the shift to profitability many retailers experience during the holiday season. Black Friday was historically when retailers went from being unprofitable, or "in the red," to being profitable, or "in the black".

Years ago, when I worked in Management, it was also the day that foretold whether the Christmas season would be a good one or a bad one. We based that one day on how the rest of the season was going to do. And it was pretty much always right--horribly busy = great season, kind of slow = bad season. Some stores count on this season to make their annual sales figures.
They go early and are usually done about noon. Last year I decided to go with them, but I was going to take my own car. Really bad idea. Due to mental exhaustion, and anxiety I figured I would be hospitalized. I can handle large crowds in the store, but all the idiots on the road was what got to me.
Never again will my mother talk me into this. Luckily this year I have to work and I have nothing to do with retail.
fight the crowds at the major stores.
