I tried three times to post this as a comment on Tom's latest update message, but since the "post" function is as effed up as the rest of the technical side of Gather, I'm hoping this will be seen. Let us pray the gather gremlins will allow this to be published:
Maintenance, updates and upgrades just aren't cutting it, Tom. Not for me, at least. My frustration has reached the breaking point after spending all day (literally) trying to read articles, getting repeated "gateway error" messages, being bounced back to the registration page every time I do manage to actually see an article, comments not posting (like this one, for example) on the rare occasion I've been able to stay signed on long enough to write one....well, you get the picture. There's something seriously wrong with the system and despite all the upgrades and maintenance you keep telling us about, it just gets worse every day.
Sorry I can't join the "attaboy" cheerleaders who think Gather is doing a great job, but for a site with the kind of fiscal clout you seem to have, it's inconceivable that it falls so short in the competence department. If you can't even make a simple 'remember me' function work, I can't imagine how anything more complicated is going to be implemented. And, although I truly enjoy interacting with many Gather members, I don't know how much longer I can put up with the amateurish technical department. Way too stressful for this old broad. I'd hate to leave, but if these problems persist, I may have to for the sake of my mental health.
Sincerely,
Ruth Dickson

I only cheerlead in a purely Pavlovian way, you see.
I need to know Gather understands their flaws. I hope they see your post and ad it to their dissatified users list so they can maintain a working website.
This is not excusable, and I agree, too many people are just saying thanks Gather, you are doing great, when that simply is not true.
He told us it would be down it was and it is working fine now.
Damnit it is fcuking ridiculous. The promote the sh*t for their election coverage and then it is completely useless. I have posted a couple of comments and gone back and they simply aren't there. I did post one on Tom's and not sure it made it or not.
Makes me want to puke when people say so glad things are running smoothly, keep up the good work! Yeah right.
You advertise the bejesus out of the thing and then you aren't staffed or technologically equipped to meet the demands. Come on, if you want this to be the MySpace or Ebay for grownups, you need to get it together at some point. I have signed on about 15 times and I just started around 4.
I got lost after that line.
You are, of course, correct. I have had no single day when every link worked correctly and I have grown tired of trying to find out whether articles I have accepted into the Writer's workshop are actually posted. Whether they are or not, about half the time they are routed through the acceptance page, again, anyway. I believe it is the youth factor.
However, I have seen worse. Incompetence is a plague that has been lamented before, by me, and many others. See "Hell in a Hand Basket" parts one and two if you are interested in my take on this issue.
