I cannot say I'm sorry when really I'm not. This got me into trouble all the time as a child. I refuse to make a meaningless apology. But if I really am sorry, I always make amends.
In dealing with other people, all three of these are very important. Doing them makes you respectable and humble, an admission that you are human and respect other people. Not doing them makes you the reverse, arrogant and disrespectful of others. Practice them no matter your age and go out of your way to use them.
I can say that from personal experience, it is so "freeing" to be able to say you are sorry (I agree David, when I truly am sorry); to say that you were wrong, and to say, "I don't know". I certainly am not perfect, but I do try to practice all three. In fact, even in Gather, I contacted a group to apologize to the owner because I had been posting the wrong kind of articles to the group. I think I shocked her, but I messed up and owned up to it. Brad, I have tried doing saying that to someone important in my life, but that person turns it around and makes it a martyr thing. There are so many so blind they WILL NOT see.
