When I lived in Germany, my favorite place to visit was the Marienburg Castle, nestled high on a hill above the city of Wurzburg
I've been thinking about this most incredible castle today as Halloween approaches because one of my spookiest memories was an evening we spent at the castle when my husband and I took a few of our best friends there while they were visiting us when they were traveling around Europe....
We took them up to the Castle late, one dark, creepy and stormy night and were able to enter the grounds while they were closed. There was no security and we just walked right in... We were the only people there, at least the only living, breathing people that we knew of......
As we walked around ramparts and old buildings all kinds of weird noises were heard...we picked up strange vibes and it wasn't much of a surprise with all the history and violence associated with this Castle as is true with any old property that dates back as far as this one does..The first building was built in the year 706, yes that is old! We heard a noise from the old well, and while we tried to look down, heard a rattling sound that none of us had made...Was someone or something trying to get out?
It also just so happened that one of our friends was great practical joker and kept disappearing and reappearing suddenly in front of us, without warning, to create an even more frightening tone...Think of the old Castles in the Dracula and Frankenstein movies, add a little lightning and thunder and a vivid imagination and you have the picture...As we were leaving another noise jolted us, and Kenny was right there beside us...he was not the source of that sound! And it was not a weather related noise, almost like a chain, ala Marley, in the Christmas Carol movie, we looked at each other, searching the expressions on all our faces and decided to get out of there even faster than we had been doing.
I think of this castle every year at this time and I think of my friends, thankful that we all could share that very spooky night and thankful that we are all still around so many years later.
