On the rare occasions you can afford shrimp, don't throw away the shells. Make shrimp stock.
Shrimp Stock
Cover the shrimp shells with water, bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Strain.
This can be used to poach your shrimp for a little more shrimp flavor or it can be used for soup.
If you have any recipes that call for bottled clam juice, use the stock. This way you control the ingredients, especially the salt content.
