On Christmas Eve, we also do this grab-bag exchange (in addition to our regular gifts). Everyone brings gifts from the dollar store, wrapped for the exchange.
I have bought tons of gifts/items for 3.00 or less from stores all year (usually all markdowns), just for this. gifts. I usually toss in a a few gifts tha cost much more than everyone's brought plaus a few extra gifts, just to add to the chaos!
We draw numbers and the first person picks from the gifts, what makes this intresting is that the second person can choose the first person gift (this usually results in hiding of gifts!), or choose from the wrapped gifts.
The gift/grabbag is fun, you have no idea how a $1.00 gift will become the most coveted item of the night! Espically with all of the "grabbing back & forth over a gift", last year the everyone was going crazy over a candle, well it was from Bath & Body Works! ;-)
If you are looking for something different try this!
If you can't afford to trade gifts with everyone on your list, think about doing this. Limit everyone to a few gifts, costing more of course, then draw names & let the fun begin! I have a friend who does this every Christmas Eve, with her family, each of her brothers & sisters buy 2 $10.00 gifts everyone can enjoy, and they go from there!
