It's no secret that I'm the proud mother of Amareah, 20 months; Andre, 2; DeAndre, 12 and Amber 15. What's also not a secret – as me and my mommy friends have discussed – is that it's often difficult to take care of yourself when you have a family to care for.
Mothers, and women in general, are notorious for putting themselves last. But what we must realize is in order to be good wives and mothers, we have to take good care of ourselves and that means taking time for ourselves.
That's where "Taking Care of the Me in Mommy: realistic tips for becoming a better mom – spirit, body & soul" comes in. Written by Lisa Whelchel, who many remember as Blair on the 1980s hit show Facts of Life, is full of suggestions on how to nurture your spirit through prayer, bible study, praise, keeping the Sabbath and journaling; your body by focusing on beauty, healthy eating and exercise and your soul by feeding your mind, having fun and participating in hobbies. Whelchel also talks about organization, housekeeping, cooking and finances as well as developing and maintaining friendships and focusing on and strengthening marriages.
"Taking Care of the Me in Mommy" is a book that offers practical advice with biblical guidance. Whelchel shares her own experiences, triumphs and failures in such a way that it's more like having a conversation than reading a book.
If you're like most moms – with a lot on your plate – take the first step to taking time for yourself by picking up a copy of "Taking Care of the Me in Mommy." You'll be glad you did.
