Here is another true story I am adding to my articles of things have happened to me be it weird, strange or down right crazy. Growing up I had this way of knowing when bad storms were coming by pacing through the house. I would pace for hours and even told others that my pacing meant that a bad storm was about to arrive.
Most of the time I would be told, "You're crazy, news is not reporting any storms to hit us today." It never failed though, within hours usually the storm would surface and they would be very bad storms.
It had been a nice Saturday in May. I cannot remember what had taken place on that day in particular, but my son's asthma and mine had been acting up all week. Enough that we both were doing treatments to breathe easier.
That evening as I went to bed, I cracked the window as a storm was approaching. I did not want anything in the room to get wet if rained while I slept, but I still wanted to hear the storm. It had rained all through the night.
Suddenly I had this urge that I had to wake up and get up. Now mind you I am the night owl type of person and would never arise before my children would. It was around 6 am and all the kids in the house were sleeping. I had been staying with a friend as we were helping each other out in our situations.
I could not return back to sleep, so I then got up and proceded to head outside for a morning cigarette. After finishing my smoke, I went to the living room where my friend and her husband were sitting. They were still awake, so I decided to say good morning and see if everything was ok.
Everything seemed to be ok, until I was mentioning that I wanted to head back to bed. It had started raining hard and the skies turned black as night. I had heard this small whistling sound that grew louder with each passing second.
I had asked my friend, "What is that?"
She began to look outside and what we saw put a look of terror in our eyes. All the neighborhood items that were not bolted down or heavy were flying through the air and it was raining sideways. She had told me get the kids in the bathroom as she was on crutches and could not move fast.
I hurried to both rooms where my children and her children were sleeping. Within seconds I had all 5 of them in the tub in the bathroom. The sounds of rumbling that we heard scared the children and made them cry. The sounds lasted about 30 seconds, but seemed a lifetime.
When all seemed clear of danger, we peered out of the bathroom to go and look outside to see what damage had been done. There were roofs off houses, garages with holes in them and lots of places where siding was removed. The backyard swingset was almost right at the back door of the house.
Later that day the officials would only call it straight line winds. The neighbor to the west of us said that she happened to look up and see the funnel cloud. She saw it as it was about to hit our neighborhood. It was such a crazy day that day.
