A brand new cherry red Ferrari idled in the middle of a busy two-lane highway. He'd sat there for two or three minutes now, just thinking. Honking horns and flashing lights behind him and beside him. It didn't bother him though. The truth was he could hardly hear them.
He'd been planning this for a while now, this little experiment of his. Ahead of him, just up a hot blacktop slope, lay a busy intersection. Cars bustled back and forth across it. The traffic light now red his direction, and green the other. Just beyond the traffic light, a block up lay the river embankment and a flimsy iron railing blocking his path.
He revved the engine. A long smooth growl emanated from under the hood. He revved the engine twice more. Was he really going to do this? He revved it again, and took the off the parking brake. If he was going to do it, he really could wait any longer. Who knew it might be fun?
He stomped on the accelerator and his new Ferrari took off like a shot. His head buried itself in the leather seat, as the city whizzed by him. On the left a couple of dirt-stained two story colonials lined the street. Going the opposite direction, a confused motorist in a blue chevy watched him jet away. To his right, the embankment and just below that, the river.
Approaching the intersection he was going much faster than anticipated. The light hadn't actually turned green yet. He didn't want to kill anyone. He jammed the accelerator down harder, if that were at all possible. In the blink of an eye he was through, but not before almost sideswiping a silver accord. At least he thought the silver blurr was an accord.
Another block down he spotted the old iron fencing, and yanked the wheel right. The Ferrari bolted over the curb. The car shrieked as its bumper tore away. The fencing a few feet ahead exploded backwards, but not before leaving a spider-web crack in the front windshield. Then he was airborne for a long time, what seemed like forever.
He imagined he was an astronaut. Floating in zero gravity felt like a wonderful dream. But soon came the re-entry into the atmosphere.
He realized his car must have somersaulted in mid-air because the crash came not from underneath, but from above. Glass on all sides imploded at him and the ceiling collapsed. That's when he blacked out.
Unlucky for him, at the intersection, an off duty paramedic jumped the fence and began sliding down the embankment before the cherry red Ferrari even dipped its hood in the river.
