He asked her to call him later. She called several times. No answer. The next morning, nothing. Finally, yawning exaggeratedly, he said he'd been there, sleeping. Only she knew he couldn't sleep through the phone right next to his ear. That afternoon, he couldn't meet her eyes. She knew.

Nitpick (because this is so good): I think you mean "but," not "only," unless you mean that she was the only person who knew he couldn't sleep through the phone ringing. "Only" is taking on some very odd colloquial usages, and that is how I am reading its use here . . . as an incorrect replacement for "but" or "except."
But, I hate to keep asking... infidelity was his first lie, but not his "biggest"? =O
