About all I can say for the United States Senate is that it opens with a prayer and closes with an investigation.

daily lives and where their influence is exerted on the government.
It must not be a distant thing, someone else's business, but they must see how every
cog in the wheel of a DEMOCRACY is important and bears it share of responsibility for the
smooth running of an entire machine."

"There is no such thing as being non-political. Just by making a decision to stay out of politics you are making the decision to allow others to shape politics and exert power over you. And if you are alienated from the current political system, then just by staying out of it you do nothing to change it, you simply entrench it."
Joan Kirner at Women Into Power Conference, Adelaide, October 1994

"As people do better, they start voting like Republicans — unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing."
Karl Rove
"The idea that a reporter has to be 'fair and balanced' is ridiculous. The fact is, the truth usually is not fair and it's not balanced. Truth stands by itself. And the idea that something called fair and balanced is a substitute for truth and fact is mindless nonsense that has captured much of the national media."
Lou Dobbs
"I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Alan Greenspan
"You measure a democracy by the freedom it gives its dissidents, not the freedom it gives its assimilated conformists."
Abbie Hoffman
"People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke."
Will Rogers
"He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder."

Apollyon The Greek ;-)
"Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber." — Plato (427?-347BC)
Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you. I
must study politics and war that my sons may have
liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My
sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy,
geography, natural history, naval architecture,
navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to
give their children a right to study painting,
poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry,
and porcelain.

A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls.

Ninety eight percent of the adults in this country
are decent, hardworking, honest Americans. It's
the other lousy two percent that get all the
publicity. But then, we elected them.

Half of the American people never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half.

The short memories of American voters is what keeps our politicians in office.

I love that Apollyon. It applies to Gather as much as to politics and everything else.
My own famous saying in the family,"I can hear your lips move but I can't see what you are saying". That always made my kids stop and think. :-)
Nice. I'm going to use that on my two teenagers as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Greenspan's now famous quote is too convoluted for me to get right on a spur of the moment issue.
