I don't care about the ratings on articles. I think they are worthless, maybe for the very reason I am pointing this out.

There are times an articles is posted or I post mine and within seconds, there is a rating. A lot of times I doubt the person read it because of the timing.

The rating system on Gather is not helpful. Might be time for it to go away. It's only abused by people.

If you are the person random rating, grow up! Maybe if you read the article, you would learn something or see someones real talent.

I read a comment once that the rating system will change in the future to do something about the problem.

You're probably right Joe. To be honest, I don't rate everything I read. I think this only becomes important with personal, create works.

at least if someone rates it, you know it's been read... or looked at, at least once - more than I can say for some of my articles

I'm with you there, flit. I'm not sure anyone other than the few in my circle read my articles. Of course, I'm not writing to get points, or to even have anyone read my writing. I'm mostly doing it for myself.

I don't rate anything I read even though I have read some wonderful things on Gather. I am a poet not a literary critic

If I open an article, I usually read all of it.....and also usually read all the comments that have been posted to it. However, if I'm late getting to the article and dozens of comments are posted, I usually just skim them. ;o)

By the way, I agree with all you said, so I gave you a 10. %^}

I rate if the piece really speaks to me; which in that case means I usually give a 10.

If It is something that appeals to me I rate it as a 9, 10 sometimes I don't rate at all,or leave a comment if it is something I'm just not into or interested in...

I think the ratings are useful, but it sucks that some people deliberately try to mess it up. I must admit, though, that I read your brief article that you wrote when you were annoyed about the points, and I was tempted to rate it low. I guess I would just hope that you'd be more understanding and patient about the technological issues. NOTHING related to technology ever works properly all of the time. However, I ended up not rating your article at all.
