Last week, Reuters and a variety of other news outlets reported that a launch pad would be established at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico in an attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial life.
However, it has now been reported that Yahoo has been forced to drop its "Time Capsule" project due to concerns by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). An INAH spokesman said the plans posed both technical and operational problems that could damage Teotihuacan. Yahoo's head of marketing in Mexico, Manuel Massanti said they did have a permit to proceed, but the INAH said they would not allow it.
The original "Time Capsule" plan would have allowed people from around the world to submit text, images, video and sounds that reflect human nature and their messages would be beamed from the pyramid in Teotihuacan, also called the City of the Gods via a laser into space.
The area of ancient ruins is already a high traffic tourist area that is visited by dignitaries and artists from around the world. The Pyramid of the Sun was constructed about 100 A.D. Its name comes from the Aztecs who visited the city of the Teotihaucanos centuries after it was abandoned. The pyramid is 738 feet across and 246 feet high, with an altar at the top called the Adosada platform. It was made out of lime plaster by the ancient Teotihuacanos, who painted brightly colored murals on it that included such things as Jaguar heads and paws, stars and snake rattles.
Though Yahoo has lost its right to beam messages from this ancient site, the company is not giving up on its original plan. Mr. Mazzanti said the company is looking for another launch site for the event and has not ruled out some other site in Mexico.
