Governor 'Good-Hair' On The Hot Seat

Here's an ad for Democratic Nominee for Texas Governor Chris Bell. Our governors race is a farce this year, with Grandma Five Names and Kinky Friedman. The debate was a joke, as it laid bare the fact that Friedman and Grandma Five Names didn't belong there, and Perry came across as a jerk. Bell was the clear winner. But in our current Balkanized media environment its doubtful Bell got any appreciable uptick in the polls. Had it been 25 years ago: he would be cruising to victory. As it is, well, the race is still a toss up. Still, it's nice to see him taking a hard line with Gov. Rick 'Goodhair' Perry:

I saw one of the debates on C-Span. Kinky and Grandma didn't seem to make any headway. Chris Bell was the clear winner as you say. That is going on in Texas? It seems like the state is going to hell.

That's a shame. LOL - I feel for you. In Illinois here we talk about how our education system is out of control. Then we mention Texas and everyone feels a bit better. GWB left the Texas State Education System as his legacy as governor. If you ask me that was reason enough not to elect him president. But, alas, two more years of Bush and then the whole country can be going through what Texas is going through. (cleaning up GWBs mess)

One of the few (only?) decent ideas W had when he was gov of Tx was to propose funding education thru general revenue, not property taxes. For my money, that's a darn good idea. The Tx Repubs were happy to hear "lower property taxes", but when W pointed out that general revenues would have to go up a bit to offset the lower property taxes, they called him a "tax and spend moderate" & damn near ran him out on a rail. That's the last time he ever proposed a good idea.

There is the rub. Education costs money. My answer to those who complain is twofold. One: Which is better, educated children or people growing up to be in prison? Two: If it doesn't cost money to educate why are the more affluent areas of the country funding education twice as much as the inner cities? I certainly don't think they are wasting the money. So, if the property taxes go down the general revenues must go up - which - requires higher taxes.

Imprisonment (not to mention execution) is costly. It stands to reason that an educated workforce will grow the economy at a faster rate than incarcerating criminals will.
