Does anyone remember Sarah Ferguson (formerly the Duchess of York)? I just noticed that today is her birthday. She was born in London on October 15, 1959.

I am a devout anti-monarchist and think the attention these people get is way out of proportion with their accomplishments (which usually equal zero).
I'm always surprised when I see Americans, who are small 'r' republicans (that is not Republican Party members necessarily), paying attention to the false fame these titles attach to these useless hangers-on.
I remember an anecdote regarding Katherine Hepburn, in the later years of her life. She was in London for some reason and the Queen's appointment secretary called to invite her to lunch. Katherine politely declined. Now, usually, declining an invitation from "Her Majesty" is frowned upon and not likely to get you another one. But given that Katherine was an elderly lady, and quite famous and accomplished in her own right, she was called and invited a second time. Kate's response was: "I will not be dining with Mrs. Mountbatten while I'm in London."
Indignantly, the secretary responded: "One does not refer to Her Majesty as Mrs. Mountbatten."
Kate instantly shot back: "This one is a Connecticutt Yankee and we told you what we thought of that malarky 200 years ago. I, for one, haven't changed my mind."
Always knew I liked the old girl.
