It was a warm sultry tropical Halloween...
The day before that big day of spooks and goblins, a cat appeared on my doorstep. It looked like a adolescent kitten and very thin. I didn't want to feed it that first night, hoping it would go home...but the next morning it was still there, meowing and crying...Hubby asked me why I hadn't fed it and I knew there would be another mouth to feed in my cat household, once I did ....
That night when the Trick or Treaters came I asked each one if they knew the cat, who had made a home in the corner of the patio near a large planter..One of the older girls told me she would ask all the people she saw that night if they were missing a cat or knew anyone who did.
No luck. well, it seemed like that then.
So, that next night, it was raining cats and dogs and I brought her into the house, (yes, it was a she) I put her in the bathroom, with a litter box and some food and water, to keep her away from the other cats in case she had any diseases or infestations. That night my big boy Luke stared at the bathroom door all evening. Misha avoided the hallway altogether.
(typical of what was to come in the future)
The next morning it was off to the veterinarian...he found earmites and said she had cateracts on her eyes from the sun, otherwise the cat was in good condition... but, what I surprise I had when he told me she was not a kitten, but a full grown cat about 2-3 years old...The reason she looked so small was that she was malnourished..She had even been spayed..I don't know how long she was on her own or what happened to put her in that dangerous position....and, I wondered why she chose my house to come to...
We called her Socks due to the white paws she has in contrast to her tabby striped body..
She's a skiddish cat, fat now and sassy, does not like to be picked up and is not a lapcat. She gets along, most of the time, with the other two but once in a while there is a skirmish between her and my other girl..Most of the time she hangs out by the back patio door watching the birds and squirrels eating from my bird feeders. She also lounges around on top of the refrigerater and can keep an eye on all the comings and goings by the other cats that way yet, be out of their way..
But, she loves my hubby, when he comes home from work each night she greets him royally..she hangs out with him while he watches tv and follows him when he goes about the house.... does she know it was his idea to feed her in the first place??
Just recently she seems to be getting a bit affectionate to me too...and, at night, she snuggles between us, lengthwise, with her head right at my fingertips, so I can rub the top of her head, never coming any closer, except, in the middle of the night...it is then she is affectionate and doesn't leave our sides, she stretches and purrs, I know she is happy, and she is the best Halloween treat I ever had.

Socks looks like she could be a twin of my cat Osiris. He lived very happily with us for 12 years.
