The new Battlestar Galactica is, of course, reflects our time in the same way that the old one reflected the culture that made it. We have changed, and in some ways become wiser while perhaps backsliding in other ways.
The old Battlestar Galactica, (Battlestar Galactica "Classic") burrowed a lot from the Mormon religion . Call it as "Mormons in Space" if you like. Some people accuse Joseph Smith of plagiarizing to write the Book of Mormon , so it seems fitting to me that some would plagiarize it as well.
The new Battlestar Galactica has polytheistic heros and the antagonists seem to follow an amalgam of our major religions: they are monotheistic, have an essence that 'reincarnates' upon death, and follow a code of ethics that they're afraid to violate yet are otherwise ruthless.

But perhaps the greatest improvement upon the original series is the addition of androids who can interact with humanity in a direct and compelling manner. This has enabled the writers to add exponential complexity to the plot while making it more personal. Enabling Cylons to interbreed with humans will add further dimension to the plot.
Call me cynical, but I believe that if the Cylons as depicted in from this series came here, our world would end without much of a fight. They would say:
We followers of The One True God want to interbreed with you and you will all get to choose between one of our 12 beautiful, intelligent, healthy, energetic, loyal models as your mate.
Anyone frustrated with members of the opposite sex would immediately say "Oh well, if someone else wants to marry those deadbeats from my home town, let them, but I'm going for this!" And that would be the end of humanity as we knew it.
