ney probably got a court date that was after this last session ended because he was doing the people's business. if he had resigned, his district would just have been unrepresented.

A top House Republican on Tuesday called for Rep. Bob Ney to resign, days after the six-term GOP lawmaker agreed to plead guilty to federal corruption charges.

"He betrayed his constituents, he betrayed the body and there's no place for him in the Congress," said Rep. Deborah Pryce, the fourth-ranking Republican in the House.

Last week, Ney admitted improperly accepting tens of thousands of dollars worth of trips, meals, sports tickets and casino chips while trying to win favors for a disgraced Washington lobbyist and a foreign aviation company.

The Ohio congressman had defiantly denied any wrongdoing for months, but he reversed course and agreed to plead guilty in court papers filed Friday. Prosecutors will recommend he serve 27 months in prison.

Ney, who is under treatment for alcohol dependency, was expected to formally plead guilty in court Oct. 13.

Mary Jo Kilroy, Pryce's Democratic opponent, has called for Ney to step down and give up his federal pension.

Trouble....Hastert could have all the Congressman fly into Washington DC for a one hour special session and be done with this MESS. Instead, he does not want to have Ney officially stepping down/resigning this close to the election....his conviction is bad enough, but to have to FORCE HIM OUT right now is horrid, and Ney knows it, so is going to suck up another month of pay...they get paid at the beginning of each month, so he'll collect his November paycheck, then resign.

He was indicted long before congress adjounred. But, the "moral values" party, being what they are, chose to let him stay in power. This is what the culture of corruption is all about. Zero accountability, zero reponsibility, zero morals, zero values, zero principles. Nothing. The GOP is the party of power at any and all costs.

Clark....you are correct......in fact, he announced I think back in July he would not be seeking re-election because of the criminal actions hanging over his head...he should have been forced to resign then.

I think that Ney should resign immediately. But, it's less than a month until election day. So hang in there, Democrats.

Luckily, I am one of the lucky folks that get the opportunity to vote his ass out of congress. Yep, he's my Congressman, I'm so proud I could puke!

Gerry Studds and Barnie Franks were not convicted of felonies. They were, however, censured for their moral impropieties, unlike Ney who has been indicted and convicted in a court of law. That is quite a different matter, and, seeing the incidents occurred over 20 years ago, pretty irrelevant.
