Iraqi Death toll

650k deaths in a population of 26,070k isn't that bad, especially when spread out over 3 years.  How many births were there during that same time period?

Using 2005 estimates from CIA world factbook

Birth rate:
    32.5 births/1,000 population (2005 est.)
Death rate:
    5.49 deaths/1,000 population (2005 est.)

looking only at the 2005 estimate, taking the 5.49 multiplying by the 26,070 we get 143,124.3 multiplied by 3 years  and we arrive at 429,372.9.

now, do the same with live births and we arrive at 2,541,825 so the net population of Iraq is still growing.

What is the problem?

rated 10. if we pull out, i think there will be more deaths because i haven't seen that the iraqis are able to police themselves yet.

the deaths are regrettable, that's a fact. but a lot of those deaths are iraqis killing iraqis.

some people think dictatorships are acceptable because they keep order.

Current homicide rate in Iraq: 3k/ mo. (Iraqi government claim- remember the CIA also said IRAQ had weapond of mass destruction) 36k/year. That is equivalent to 400K Americans getting killed each year. 3 Years would equal 1.2 million Americans getting murdered. See how we reacted when we lost 3k over a 5 year period? It seems to me the more acceptable figure is the 3k who died on 9/11.

Civil war--internicine slaughter is by it's very nature bloody and very bad. If the democrats decide that we need to remove our forces from Iraq, then we'll figure out what to do. I don't think the death rate will go down. I do think the birth rate per 1,000 will possibly go up.

Gee, if the idea that these deaths are not "that bad" then those of us who are pro-life and clamoring against abortion should keep our mouths shut.

I agree with Mugg. It is easy to be cavalier about other people dying. But like most of your articles it is a dandy way to run up gather points.

The problem is the figure - Iraq has a population of nearly 25,000,000 - not 25,000.

I don't know whether to believe the figure of 655,000 or not but I do know this - there is too much killing going on in the name of bringing the "Almighty's gift of freedom" to the Iraqis.

my problem is this:
Saddam is looking SAINTLY if were to compare death toll numbers.

In essence, you are forced to conclude the following:
People would have been safer under Saddams dictatorship.

in my notation k = 1,000 hence 650 k = 650,000 ... 26,070 k = 26,070,000 Still, the 32 births per 1,000 population is quite high.

No, Marty doesn't think it's okay. Marty thinks that Marty can't really control other people's hatreds without being truly oppressive. Sure, we could attempt to level Mosques, refugee camps, and other terrorist ammunition dumps, but that would probably engender more hatred than the safety we would create by doing so.

Wouyld it have been safer for the world if America withdrew from influence in the world? Not for long.

REALLY? So it's OK if the Babies, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers, Fathers are REPLACED?
I don't know about anyone else but, I think life is sacred. (FYI- I am prochoice.)

It would be a safer world if the Bush Regime had finished stabilizing Afganistan instead of invading Iraq.

Steve, that was/is the government's intention. But there is some policing going on. There are some Americans there who don't care about oil, but who really do care about Iraqi safety. I have a friend who was severely injured trying to help Iraqis in their own country. He never had any greed for oil. He did believe he could do some good there.

Most of our military are volunteers. In fact, we are an all volunteer force, For the most part, we are trying to help the various situations where we are involved in the world. It's sad that there are some cynics who write off the efforts of many many people just because they are opposed to political views expressed by a guy in the white house who is concerned about trying to keep Americans safe.
