Most Americans probably don't care about this story. I guess most people choose not to be investigative jounalists. because of this hazzard. The way things are going at present, there will probably be fewer still. Freedoms and choices are important.

What many don't realize; there have been more than 25 journalist's killed in Russia in the past 24 mths.
It's very sad, after all the hope that was there for democracy after the fall of communist party rule. But, unlike in the "satellite" states of Eastern and Central Europe, nothing even remotely resembling democracy had existed in Russia before the "October Revolution" - they went straight from feudalism to communism (or whatever that was). Also, they were under that system for a lot longer than any other country (from 1917, rather than from after 1945), and - this is perhaps the most important thing - it was *theirs*. They were the masters of this "second world", they were the center of things, they were a superpower. For many Russians, Strongman Putin is a promise to restore some of that greatness.
I will read newspapers to see what they are saying, but that doesn't mean I have to believe it.
My family reads the paper to see what is going on, I read the paper to see what someone THINKS is going on. If I want the facts, I'll look for people who have actually had the experience. You are wise for reading so many papers.
P.S.
Thanks for your help with the NY Times website.
