Watching this whole Foley Scandal unfold, it is sadly obvious that the Republicans do not GET IT. Instead of stepping up, admitting they dropped the ball, and put children at risk, it's all about finger pointing and saving their own skin. For instance, Hastert in a statement to the Chicago Tribune BLAMES DEMOCRATS and ABC News for mushrooming the scandal. Where is personal culpability, where is standing up and ADMITTING that you dropped the ball? Even if it was Hastert's staff that dropped the ball, it was his staff, and he should have been following through on something this important.
Tom Reynolds here in New York is NO BETTER...he admits he talked with Hastert about it, yet claims he WASHED HIS HANDS OF IT once he brought it to the Speakers attention. Oh, potential predator preying on pages, but he did not feel this was important enough to follow through on? Further, if he'd WASHED HIS HANDS OF IT, how come his staff is now admitting they spoke to the highest members of Congress about Foley concerns, and how come one of Reynolds staff FLEW TO FLORIDA to convince Foley to step down? By the way, who paid for that trip? If it was the taxpayers, Reynolds had to SIGN OFF ON IT!
Boehner from Ohio is just as bad and said in a radio interview Tuesday: "I believe I talked to the speaker and he told me it had been taken care of. My position is it's in his corner, it's his responsibility." It's SCARY to see how little concern there was/is for our nations children by these men. Alexander is no better, it was HIS PAGE, yet he did not follow through on the matter, and Shimkus...he was/is in charge of the Page Program!
It's time for Americans to pick up their phones, and demand of Washington that the resignations begin. Hastert, Alexander, Reynolds, Shimkus and Boehner should resign from Congress EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY. Anything less says the Republicans care more about their positions than our children.

Wow, that was a $100 bet yesterday. What's happened since? Oh yeah, republicans have admitted that they kept this information from Dems. You SURE you want this bet, and if so, how many people can get in on it? I haven't seen a sure thing many times in my life, but this one is definitely it.
Bryan...I see the Republicans trying to spin this, and blame Democrats...to me, it is really simple. If those pages were your children, would you consider Hastert, Shimkus, Alexander, and Reynolds actions adequate? If you answer no, as ALL PARENTS would, then heads need to roll. This is not a Republican or Democrat matter, it is a matter of OUR CHILDREN. I'm repulsed at Hastert's quote in the Chicago Tribune blaming all of this on Democratic operatives and ABC News, as it speaks volumes about him, and the Republican Party being far more concerned about the elections, and mitigating damage than DOING THE RIGHT THING.
Of course heads need to role. But my point is, step back and give the republicans a chance to do it to themselves. All the signs are there that this is exactly what is taking place (ie: imploding). If, and only if, the repubs fail to act, THEN the Dems need to step in. Otherwise, the Dems acting as if they are the new moral police, simply reeks of election year timing/politics...which is a huge turn-off...especially to independents.

In 1983, Democratic congressman Gerry Studds was found to have sexually propositioned House pages and actually buggered a 17-year-old male page whom he took on a trip to Portugal. Did anyone demand to know why the Democratic speaker of the House, Thomas "Tip" O'Neill, took one full decade to figure out that Studds was a sick gaywad who was propositioning male pages? Maybe so, I don't know, it's been too long ago.
But now, the same Democrats who are incensed that Bush's National Security Agency was listening in on al-Qaida phone calls are incensed that Republicans were not reading a gay congressman's instant messages.
Foley didn't claim he was the victim of a "witch-hunt." He didn't whine that he was a put-upon "gay American." He didn't stay in Congress and haughtily rebuke his critics. He didn't run for re-election. He certainly didn't claim he was "saving the Constitution." (All he did was stupidly blame it on an alcohol addiction, which you have to admit does have a certain Democratic ring to it.)
It doesn't matter whether the worthless scumbag was DEM or GOP in either of these cases. What matters is that they were caught! Although I can say with reasonable certainty that if Foley was a DEM, all you people would be saying, "hey wait a minute, it's just e-mail talk, he didn't actually molest anyone!"

According to two people close to former congressional page Jordan Edmund, the now famous lurid AOL Instant Message exchanges that led to the resignation of Mark Foley were part of an online prank that by mistake got into the hands of enemy political operatives, the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal.
According to one Oklahoma source who knows the former page very well, Edmund, a conservative Republican, goaded an unwitting Foley to type embarrassing comments that were then shared with a small group of young Hill politicos. The prank went awry when the saved IM sessions got into the hands of political operatives favorable to Democrats.
The primary source, an ally of Edmund, adamantly proclaims that the former page is not a homosexual. The prank scenario was confirmed by a second associate of Edmund. Both are fearful that their political careers will be affected if they are publicly brought into the matter.
The prank scenario only applies to the Edmund IM sessions and does not necessarily apply to any other exchanges between the former congressman and others.
The news come on the heels that Edmund has hired former Timothy McVeigh attorney, Stephen Jones.

Three more former congressional pages have come forward to reveal what they call "sexual approaches" over the Internet from former Congressman Mark Foley.
The pages served in the classes of 1998, 2000 and 2002. They independently approached ABC News after the Foley resignation through the Brian Ross & the Investigative Team's tip line on ABCNews.com. None wanted their names used because of the sensitive nature of the communications.
"I was seventeen years old and just returned to [my home state] when Foley began to e-mail me, asking if I had ever seen my page roommates naked and how big their penises were," said the page in the 2002 class.
The former page also said Foley told him that if he happened to be in Washington, D.C., he could stay at Foley's home if he "would engage in oral sex" with Foley.
