Donald, would you rather have Americans supporting troops by sticking magnets on thier cars or others who help fight for Congress to provide body armor to the troops? Which is better in your opinion? And which is just a hollow gesture of societal conformity?

I live in Japan, and two years ago, when I was visiting the states, I was in the car with my mother and mother-in-law when the conversation turned to the war. I mentioned to my "mothers" that Bush's claims that the world thought Saddam had WMD were outright lies because, in Japan, we saw plenty of reporting to the contrary. Their response was that it makes no sense to argue anymore about whether the war was justified, it was now our duty as American citizens to support the troops. I answered that if we wanted to support the troops we should be calling for more body armor and demanding to know what it was they were dying for, not buying magnetic ribbons, that were made in Taiwan or China, by the way. This was met with harumphs, as if my comments were made by some crazed person who was completely out of touch with reality.
Two years later, nothing has changed. No, I take that back. We have now become a country that is willing to torture and detain people indefinitely because we are afraid. Those yellow ribbons that are on the back of so many SUVs are there to support our troops who are now fighting for our right to torture, the very thing Saddam Hussein is on trial for this very moment. Does anyone see the hypocrisy, the irony here?

I don't think that the support goes very far past the magnets, if it did we would have pulled out the troops before now and might not have put them in harm's way in Iraq in the first place.

I do everything possible to bring home the troops. Writing letters to Congressman and even the President has been one of my tactics. I don't expect that the President will even reply to my letter but it is worth a try.

I am angry that they weren't even given the latest edition of Kevlar vests and that the Humvees weren't armored. These things are a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. There is no military solution to fighting terrorism. The British learned this when fighting terrorism in Northern Ireland. They didn't get anywhere until they engaged with the terrorists and thwarted their efforts. The same will have to be done here. I support the troops by being against their deployment in Iraq.
