My life long love for horses might well have been kicked into high gear because of a boxer named Lady. Tired of listening to my whining for a horse, my brother would lead Lady, the family dog, to the end of a hallway forbidden to her. He would lift my tiny frame onto her back and command in a stern tone, "Get to the kitchen, Lady." It was zero to top speed in seconds. A jockey pose was no guarantee for a safe ride. A slide on the polished hardwood floor either to the left or right sent us ricocheting off the walls. The sharp turn into the kitchen inevitably sent both a rug and me flying through the air. Lady always apologised afterward with wet slurpy kisses and jelly bean postures. I praised her and secretly fed her half my supper beneath the table. She was quite a dog that horse!
