Sometimes I cringe to think of things I did as a young parent. These were things that were it not for the grace of God could have turned out really bad.
When my first child was about two months old, my husband was transferred from Meridian Mississippi to Barber's Point Hawaii. After our household goods were packed and shipped, our little family began the week long drive to San Francisco California. Weary from the long days of riding and looking for a bit of entertainment, we checked into local motels and arranged for babysitting service from lists that the motels provided.
My only excuse is that I didn't know any better. But I still can't believe I did that.

Unfortunately I was 21 at the time and hadn't heard any horror stories yet. Now that I'm 61 and have years of social services experience, I know better.
I remember going Trick or Treat for hours in the dark, going for long walks without telling anywhere I'd be, and even riding the New York City Subway by myself. In the next generation, I was afraid to let my teenage daughter walk to the store a few blocks away and my grandkids never go anywhere without adult supervision.
You're a good parent, you care so much. And the thing is, nothing is like it used to be. What was so safe and OK (remember when we didn't even lock our doors?) and what is safe now, have narrowed to the point of being almost non-existant. Your experiences will help other new parents,
Hugs,
Marilyn
