I wanted to explain that the majority of the groups I created have been put on moderation for images and articles. There does not seem to be a way to separate the two and for the moment I would rather have family friendly images on groups anyway, so this is easier to accept or decline as they get posted.
On the subject of content - I personally will not accept work that is found online from other sites into any of my groups. It is nice that you found some data or tidbit, fact or article online, but unless you are the author or have written permission from the author, it is not yours to cut, paste and publish.
On the other hand, feel free to post a link to an article, share your thoughts on the subject and start a discussion where appropriate. Isn't that what a conversation is all about?
If you are in the habit of taking content off the internet, I highly advise contacting the author or webmaster beforehand and get permission before continuing this practice.
I did not join www.gather.com to read full articles posted from the Department of Justice, myths from the Humane Society, measuring options from cooking sites and other related data that members here have lifted from the internet.
How would you feel if someone took one of your articles and posted it on their website for profit or in some newsletter? An author can do a google search and then will find that their content is located several different places online and then they have to compete with other sites to get traffic to the same material. I do not see how that is fair to the original author.
The groups I created are for the sharing of personal experiences from us members to gain insights, etc. I am more than capable of doing my own searches and finding data when I want to and did not come to gather to read content from other sites that were not even properly cited.

I thought this site was about writing and as a writer I am letting others know that writers do not want their content taken and it should not be done here either.
Better to get a heads up instead of a cease and desist letter from the content owner. Just a heads up
I found a poem I had published in a magazine and a book of poetry posted on the wall of my child's grade school. It was the complete poem and accurately presented. Underneath was the lgend, "Author unknown."
The poem was published in nationally distributed places and was written, and originally published, before I moved to this state. I was amused and mildy affronted because I cannot imagine how and where it could have been found without my name on it. I never did track it down, however. At least no one claimed it as his or her own.
Thanks for posting, Bonnie, and for the record, the group you made all of us for groups, had to be one of the best things I've seen a non-gather employee do.

But how do you know?
Namaste
yes it also applies to recipes. If you know where they came from..You have to post the source...Or website..Most websites T.O.U. (terms of use) require a link back if you use their recipes. So others can find the site. Even a cookbook......I usally post ones I have tried and made myself.
