I live in a city that prides itself on open green space, parks and public art. St. Paul Minnesota is awash with great art in many of our city's parks and attractions. On a recent photo safari I went to photograph my favorite fountain at Como Lake. The fountain is known as the Schiffman fountain. Dr. Schiffman was one of the original members of the St. Paul Park Board. While traveling in Barcelona in 1897 he saw the original mermaid fountain and had one commissioned for St. Paul. The artist of this bronze and cast iron mermaid holding a shell and wreathed with a garland and surrounded by dolphins is unknown. The fountain is a gorgeous example of Neo-Classical and Beaux Arts style. It's a shame that this artist goes unknown. Do you know who this artist is? This is a fine art mystery ready to be solved.
