This happened just outside of Breaux Bridge, a little town in the bayou country of Louisiana, and while it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, believe me, it's real.
An out-of-state traveler, we'll call him John to keep the anonymity, was on the side of the road, hitchhiking on a real dark night in the middle of a thunderstorm. Time passed slowly and no cars went by. It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face.
Suddenly John saw a car moving slowly, approaching and appearing ghost-like in the rain. It slowly and silently crept toward him and stopped.
Soaked to the bone and badly in need of a ride, John jumped in the car and closed the door; only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the wheel, and no sound of the engine to be heard over the rain.
The car continued to creep slowly forward and John was terrified, too scared to think clearly. He just sat, white with fear, unable to move. He saw that the car was approaching a sharp curve and, too scared to jump out, he started to pray and beg for his life. John was sure the ghost car would go off the road and in the bayou, and he would surely drown! But just before the curve a shadowy figure appeared at the driver's window and a hand reached in and turned the steering wheel, guiding the car safely around the bend. Then, just as silently, the hand disappeared through the window and the hitchhiker was alone again.
Paralyzed with fear, John watched the hand reappear every time they reached a curve. Finally, scared to near death, John had all he could take, jumped out of the car and ran to the nearest town, Breaux Bridge.
Wet and in shock, he went into the Corner Bar and, his voice quivering, ordered two shots of whiskey and began telling everyone about his supernatural experience. As the patrons realized John was not drunk and indeed could be telling the truth, a silence enveloped the bar.
The sound of the front doors creaking broke the silence as two men entered the room. One of the men looked up. Staring at John, the man said to his friend, "Look Boudreaux, ders dat idiot that rode in our car when we waz pushin' it in the rain."
