Cayce was born March 18, 1877 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky and died January 3, 1945 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His life began in a very normal fashion. He married and had two children. He became adept at photography, taught Sunday school and liked to putter in his garden. Though hedied 61 years ago, his memory will always remain with those who are seekers of knowledge.
Through a self-induced sleep state, Cayce answered every question from the mundane to the secrets of the universe. He also made many predictions that later proved true. As well, he dispensed medical advice and natural remedies for countless illnesses. Cayce claimed to be able to access the akashic recordsor Book of Life that apparently include every living soul. He could readily discuss more than 10,000 subjects but focused primarily on philosophy and reincarnation, dreams and their interpretation, ESP, psychic phenomenon, spiritual growth, meditation and prayer, astronomy and even Atlantis.
Other abilities attributed to Cayce include astral projection, prophesying, mediumship (communication with the dead) and seeing auras. Cayce became interested in learning more about these subjects after he was informed about the content of his "readings," which he said he never actually heard himself. He explained that the unconscious mind has access to information that the conscious mind does not.
Over the course of 43 years (1901 to 1944) he gave between 25,000 and 30,000 readings. Readings done before 1923 were not preserved. However, in that year he hired Gladys Davis as his secretary. She took notes while Cayce's wife continued to guide the readings. Over those 43 years, Cayce gave 9, 603 "health readings" in which he would diagnose a person and prescribe a cure. He was also able to do this at a distance from the person being read.
He gave 1,920 life readings in which he described a person's physical, emotional and mental condition in terms of past life experiences. He also gave 747 business readings where he issued advice on partnershiips, the stock market, business models, etc. Another 630 readings had to do with interpreting dreams. Cayce claimed that people could receive valuable insights in their dreams that could help them in their physical life.
Over the 43 years, he also gave 450 mental and spiritual readings, but these were not done in trance. They focussed on what a person could do to achieve a better mental and spiritual life. As well, there were 954 extant readings on various subjects, such as missing persons, buried treasure, psychic abilities, auras, prophecy, structure of reality and geology.
Edgar Cayce's Prophecies
As noted earlier, Cayce made a number of predictions. Some have come true to this date and some have not. What follows are a few of his predictions and revelations.
1) On March 6, 1929, Cayce foresaw the stock market crash, which occurred some months later.
"These were given as to how the changes and how breaks. At the same time there was given that there was a division in the money conditions and positions. That fight has hardly begun. When this is an issue we may expect a CONSIDERABLE break and bear market, see? This issue being between those of the reserves of nations and of INDIVIDUALS, and will cause - unless another of the more STABLE banking conditions come to the relief - a great disturbance in financial circles. This warning has been given, see? Mind these are all in the position of being an influence in market conditions, and may turn EITHER way, as the conditions come."
2) On Dec. 26, 2004 on April 28, 1941, he predicted the Tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
"Watch for strife in ... the Indian Ocean.... Ye say that these are of the sea; yes, for there shall the breaking up be."
3) In 1936, Cayce predicted the beginning of the earth's pole shift, which would coincide with the beginning of a New Age. He said that shift would become apparent in 2000 or 2001 in the South Atlantic Ocean between Africa and South America.
Years later on NOVA, the PBS television program from WGBH in Boston scientists reported a startling discovery concerning the earth's electromagnetic poles and fields. They revealed evidence that the magnetic field deep within the earth was weakening, (particularly in the South Atlantic where Cayce had noted) making it more susceptible to deadly radiation sweeping through the solar system. They noted as much as a 10 per cent decrease in the last 300 years and predicted that in just a few centuries, it could be gone entirely. Another affect of a pole shift is that the planet's electromagnetic shield would no longer channel solar winds to the current poles and due to the radiation the Southern Lights would be seen around the world. Although a beautiful sight, the resulting radiation would make people sick.
3) Cayce claimed the existence at one time of a community of people known as the Essenes and went into great detail during more than 170 readings about them. With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls (1947-1956), their existence became reality. From readings of Jan. 17 and May 24, 1934, he said:
"Before this we find the entity was during those periods when there was much turmoil in the land of Judea, when there was the announcing of the prophet, of the new teacher, and all Judea had gone out to John. The entity then was among those that had been of the students of the Essenes and in direct connection with many that had been prophesying, had been searching the records of or for the coming of the new light to those that had been hemmed in by tradition and by the acts of peoples in a political and religious purpose in the land.
In that experience we find the entity was a soul seeking through those associations and activities that brought the entity into the environ of the Grecian-Syrophenician surroundings; and in the activity in Palestine grew into womanhood there as one - that would be termed in the present - in the household of the counselor of those that traded with the peoples in that land. With the advent of the Roman rule, the activities of such people became much more important; for there was the necessity of keeping a balance with the Jew, the Greek and the Roman.
When the ministry of the forerunner began, that of itself brought into the association of the entity many of those that were in that particular sect of peoples to whom the entity then was joined - the Essenes. It then became a refuge or hospital for those that might become the teachers, the ministers, for the activities of the Essenes or teachers of which the Master was a member during the sojourn in Palestine."
4) Cayce also saw a number of new developments in the field of medicine, including the use of blood as a diagnostic tool. When asked in November 1927 if blood showed traces of the bodies actual condition, he replied:
"This is bettered, though there are still EVIDENCES of same in blood. For, as is seen, there is no condition existent in a body that the reflection of same may not be traced in the blood supply, for not only does the blood stream carry the rebuilding forces to the body, it also takes the used forces and eliminates same through their proper channels in the various portions of the system. Hence we find red blood, white blood and lymph all carried in the veins. These are only separated by the very small portions that act as builders, strainers, destroyers or resuscitating portions of the system - see? Hence there is ever seen in the blood stream the reflections or evidences of that condition being carried on in the physical body. The day may yet arrive when one may take a drop of blood and diagnose the condition of any physical body."
5) On May 28, 1926, Cayce spoke of a connection between temperature and changes in deep ocean currents. He noted there would be weather changes as a result, as with La Nina and El Nino.
"As the heat or cold in the various parts of the earth is radiated off and correlated with reflection in the earth's atmosphere, this in its action changes the currents or streams in the ocean...." (This reading was concerning the future of wheat crops and weather patterns and he predicted dramatic changes in our weather.)
Future Prediction
Cayce predicted that between 1959 and 1998, there would be great global transformations, but these events would not result in the end of the world. Rather, they would usher in a New Age of hope and community for all humankind. While many people claim that wars, world hunger, political turmoil, economic challenges, climatic changes, pollution, increased violence, etc. will lead to the end of the world, Cayce said these events would awaken humanity as to the real reasons they exist and the necessity of making personal and collective changes for the betterment of all in our global community. He said it would be our opportunity to become a global family of spiritual beings and in so doing, transform the world.
Further details of Cayce's life and work are explored in the classic book There is a River (1942) by Thomas Sugrue.
