It's another example of the FREEBIES we give illegals to offset the CHEAP WAGES. I guess us Americans could afford to work for less money if our childrens dental were being paid for, or we could get COUPONS for a free eye exam and glasses for each of our children whenever they needed it....couple this with their use of our Emergency Rooms, and you have the American TAX PAYER providing MAJOR MEDICAL INSURANCE for all 20 MILLION illegals in America.

Good article and I agree 100%, especially since I'm one of those LEGAL people who doesn't have any insurance. I am disabled, but to qualify, you must go through the disability process and it takes over two years - still I am waiting... and waiting, with no insurance at all, plus we're on a small fixed income as my husband is also disabled, and legal.
I don't understand the whole thing at all - cheap wages? Some of the illegals (New Orleans), make 10.00 per hour, doing jobs that Americans would and could do. And to top it off, they or some of them eventually return home to Mexico, with our money, children educated and guess how much more the money is worth over there? Three times as much and thier prices are lower. We are dumb. And not looking out for our own.

You're right Marilyn...the jobs Americans would and could do. My son couldn't get his new glasses because my insurance wouldn't cover it. All my insurance covered was the $40.00 balance on the eye exam.

Sigh....hate to burst your collective bubbles, guys. You need to look a little harder for health care and dental care. They use the same "free clinics" we poor folks use.

My daughters are not insured. I depend upon the same services through the same clinic that offers a farm worker health program. I pay for care according to my income.

Most of us are too proud and too impatient to wait for subsidized care. You would not "dream" of attending a low income/free clinic.

This is your loss. They are humans - not animals.

You take your pet to the vet....Why would you deny farm workers access to dental and medical care? Most have no private transportation, private living quarters or any of the things you take for granted.

Have no fear, though. Help is on the way. The U.S. is contracting with Thailand for migrant labor these days. New language, new race, new blood.

Sigh......how is it possible to live in this country and deny poverty or diversity?

The fact is that those so called free clinics are paid for by my tax dollars! Why should illegal aliens be allowed to have any care in this country? They are not even valid visitors! Why should I have to pay for their free ticket? Where are MY rights? Where are the rights of the middle class families that work so hard to make ends meet? That Marilyn's son couldn't get new glasses because their insurance wouldn't cover the cost and they couldn't afford the out of pocket expense, makes me want to puke! Perhaps they could afford the expense if their taxes that they pay on their hard earned income weren't going to fund the illegitimate. You wake up, Jackie. You have no idea how the system works for the middle class. I am sure they make too much money to be eligible to take advantage of free clinics. It's not a matter of being too proud to use them. They are penalized because they choose to be productive, working members of our society while others, some of whom are just down right lazy, and some of whom have no rights at all to it, live off the fruits of their labors.

Clearly, the clinics were created to help human beings gain care that they otherwise wouldn't have. And, that this happened because people felt strongly enough about it to work very hard; to persevere to get it done.

So, my question is: what is your suggestion on how to improve the situation? What is your plan to ensure Marilyn's son has glasses AND that those paying taxes are actually happy with doing so? And, just who will distinguish between the lazy ones and those who are deserving?

Marilyn can contact her local health department or even better, begin with the school nurse. The school nurse does a small eye exam and based on the results, completes a referral. Marilyn takes this form to where ever the nurse sends her - most likely the health department. They will make her an appointment and pay for the exam and the glasses - if Marilyn, in fact, is below the poverty level. It isn't difficult to meet the income requirement for most of us. It depends on her income and dependents.

She can also contact the health department or United Way and request information.

There is plenty of assistance out there for working parents of children - it is not just for illegals or just for us - it is for all children because all children are precious...no matter who there parents are or how they got here....they are innocent.

St. Jude Childrens' Hospital happens to be one of my favorite charities because they cater to pediatric research and care of cancer victims. No child that is stricken with cancer is refused care because of parents' inability to pay. It's a great charity and I contribute often and generously because I believe it is a WORTHY cause.

Now if you want to invite the world to live in this country without going through the VISA process and take advantage of all of the social services that we provide, I suggest you, and all those that agree with you, start a charitable organization and contribute as often and as as much as you would like to pay for these services. I am sure that if all of you contribute in a ratio equal to even a tenth as much as the time you spend championing their cause with your mouths, your pens, and your keyboard taps, they will be even better taken care of than they are now. This will give people like Marilyn and her family tax relief that will allow them to pay for items like glasses that are not covered in their insurance plans.

I do not know where all you people live, but where I live the illegal people that work have taxes taken out of there checks every week. Where is the money that they are paying to the government?

What about all these people that are able to work but are just to lazy to go?

We have alot of chicken processing plant where I live, most of the workers are illegal workers because very very few legal people will go there. Their excuse is it is to cold or to nasty.

How many people are going to work from sun up to sundown 6-7 days a week picking friuts and veggies for you to eat? Would you?

These people may be getting free health service, is it really free? If you have a job, you can file your income tax at the first of the year and get most if not all of your money back. Plus if you have children you can get earned income credit.

i am a school nurse, and we have free clinics for all of our children that come to our school. They check everyone. And guess what, most of our children are Americans that have lazy parents that will not go to work. They just wait for the mail to run on the first and the third for their paychecks.

Show me one program that provides full ON SITE dental care for Legal American children in say Harlem. Does not exist, we do not have dental care on Wheels here.

These people are not supposed to be working here in the first place. They are what is called ILLEGAL aliens. It is, in other words, AGAINST the LAW that they are here, let alone working here. Do you know the difference between what is legal and what is illegal, between right and wrong, between good and bad?

Let's get this down to a personal level. Do you care whether you are murdered today? Do you care if your car is stolen today? Do you care if your children are kidnapped today? The reason you can be reasonably sure that none of this will happen to you today, is because there are LAWS against these things and if someone does murder you, steal your car, or kidnap your children, these laws will be enforced. Forget about all the other reasons, and there are plenty of them, but consider just this one. Every time you undermine the laws that were made to protect the citizens of this country by allowing people to break the law with no consequences, you are undermining the legal system as a whole, and thereby diminishing the protection by the law of the things you deem dear.

I take my pet to the vet because she is my responsibility, I have a pet because I want a pet. I don't own an illegal alien, don't want one either. So why should my hard earned money go towards supporting them?

heh, I hear alot of different things. I myself was born and raised in the US, but uh...I get free dental and medical for my kids, etc. It's called not having a high paying job. The government pays for my medical bills. I don't have a problem for that being extended to illegals, as long as it's the same across the board. For example, if you're a male, it's near impossible for you to get benefits from medicaid, even if you have children. If you're female, it's easy if you have children. Figure that one out. We're outraged about our tax dollars going to medical assistance to humans, but no one's angered by the fact that a few years back, there was a segment on 60 minutes about a scientist that gets paid BY THE GOVERNMENT, to measure how fast ketchup comes out of a bottle......... I don't know about you, but I'd rather have tax dollars go to the medically needy, regardless of their "legal status" as opposed to measuring something useless. We forget, unless we're native, none of us really came from "Palo Alto".

Julie .... there is even more to the tax evasion side of this problem. These workers go 'home' at night to landlords who collect rent in cash. This income is never reported and the 'multiple family' dwellings are seen and taxed (real estate, school, etc.) as single family dwellings. If there are children involved they attend our schools without paying school taxes. Some people say "They are paying taxes by paying the landlord who pays taxes." Nice try!

Flimsy.....do a GOOGLE search for Santa Clara Migrant Education Program, and you'll find all this right there on their site. I'm working on putting up and article on the FREE EYE CARE and GLASSES program, and wait till you see the HOUSING our taxes are providing to illegal aliens at DISCOUNT PRICES. One project I found today spend over eight million dollars building FIRST RATE housing at DISCOUNT prices to these illegals, with a host of ON SITE services many Americans WOULD LOVE TO HAVE.

Don't forget the hiring halls that are being built by some Villages such as Southampton in NY so the illegal aliens have a place to rest, watch TV, make coffee, etc as they wait for jobs.

Sorry to disagree on this one Jackie but my son had an eye exam in school. The nurse said he had a vision problem. I did not get a referral, I was told to take him to his optometrist. They don't send you to the health dept. or DHS here in Maine. They actually send the forms home from school with your child (the first day) and tell you how you can apply for medicaid. You can't have savings in the bank or a new car (which in their eyes can be 10 years old and still worth money in the blue book). I paid for the visit! The doctors here know this is a problem too, so most of them work with you and will allow you to pay them $5.00 a month until the bill is paid). Come to find out my child had no vision problem. It doesn't take much to qualify...true, as far as annual income goes, but you cannot own any property or the state puts a lean on it if you die and your estate is in probate. And please don't say I would not dream of attending a low income clinic. I HAVE visited one and waited many hours. Also, I HAVE been there with NO transportation....I DO NOT! take anything for granted...just so you know! My son also comes home every year with the MEP paperwork for migrant workers assistance..it does exist!I don't like the arguement how nobody knows what the farm workers go through but are so sure that some people have never gone without transportation or ever visited a free clinic. PLEASE! I have been there Jackie...many times over. I also know that people should have the same sympathy for their fellow americans too! This is not intended for arguement.

Right Bob. I know a man that owns a trailer park. He rents to illegal aliens and doesn't claim the rent on taxes. He has about 15 trailers that he rents out. Now to some degree I can sympathize with why he does this. His wife has been bedridden for fifteen years at least. And has been an invalid for at least 35 years. She had to have a really expensive machine that had something to do with her breathing. Medicare would not pay for this machine. The company that makes this machine would only rent it to him and not sell it to him out right. So he has used the money from the trailers to pay for this machine every month. Unfortunately we had a storm a month or so ago and the power went out. She could only survive 30 minutes without this machine so they had a generator. But for some reason he could not get the generator started and she died. So on one side I can be compassionate and understand why he did this. He loved her dearly and has cared for her by himself for the 35 years she has been an invalid. He could have easily put her in a nursing home but he did not. But now that she is gone, I don't know whether he will keep renting out the trailers or what. That remains to be seen.

Take, for example, an illegal Mexican who sneaks in here with his wife and five children.
He takes a job for five or six dollars an hour.
At that wage with six dependents he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year if he files income tax he gets an "earned income credit" of up to $3,200 free.
He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent.
He qualifies for food stamps.
He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay) health care.
His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school.
He requires bilingual teachers and books.
He qualifies for relief from high energy bills.
If they are or become, aged, blind or disabled they qualify for SSI. Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for medicare.
All of this is at that taxpayers expense.
He doesn't have to worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.
Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.
He cannot be fired, harassed, or sued.
He and his family receive the equivalent of $20 to $30 an hour in benefits.
Working Americans are lucky to have $5 or $6 an hour left after paying their bills and his. They also pay for increased crime, graffiti, and trash cleanup. Cheap labor? YEAH RIGHT!"
Forgot to mention: Most of these illegals send money every week back to their families in Mexico (yup, even on $5 and $6 and hour) check out the long lines at Western Union on payday. It surely doesn't get spent here in the USA.

I do know the difference between legal and illegal. And I do care. I have an husband in Mexico and we had done the right thing and filed for a Visa. We have been waitng for 6 years for a answer. So I do understand why people come here illegally.

To Carole: At the schools where I work, nobody has to pay for any breakfast or lunch. Also,if the illegal person does not have a social security number they can not file an income tax return to get an earned income credit.

In reference to school lunches etc, here in Florida, children pay for their meals, unless they can not afford it and then they are provided FREE.

There has been a barrage of stolen SS# and they are all illegal aliens, otherwise why would anyone sleal a SS# when they can get one of their own.
Identity theft is a very serious problem along with forged documents too numerous to mention.

At $5 and $6 an hour, one would not be required to file a return. ALL incidents do not fit ALL illegal immigrants. There are nearly as many circumstances as there are illegals.

I can appreciate that everyone sees this issue differently and I respect each of your individual thoughts and feelings on it. I can tell you that for we who are citizens the rules are often different. Before intigrating my family with my partners I would have been considered in the "Poverty income" class. I was a single mom with a low income to say the least. I could make our bills and housing costs but often had little left for food. I applied for food stamps / health assistance and was told that I did not qualify because my income was too high. I asked how they came to this conclusion when the form i filled out clearly showed how much was actually left. I was told that only half of all my bills and a third of my housing costs were considered. Well if only I could pay them that way it would have been great. But I said okay and struggled on. A few years later my father was struck with dementia and needed 24/7 care. The doctors did not recommend a home (he had really good doctors that cared about his well being) as his mental status and actions could have put him in "possibe physical jepordy" unless I could afford a higher quality private facility. I could not so I cared for him myself. I lost my job due to the circumstances but his income was added to the home which was less then mine actually. So once again I applied for food stamps / health care. This time I did not qualify because I did not make enough money. Hmmm. Now this actually happened.

So I have to say that if at poverty income I could not access help I would have to assume that in my current position of middle class my chances would decline even more. I now am in an income bracket that is considered middle classbut I still do not have insurance. Free clinics feel the household income is too high for us to qualify for reduced fees and (here is the real kicker) if we contact a doctor EVEN if we offer to pay cash for the visit, they will not accept us as patients becasue we have no insurance.

So if we look at it in this light then no, we as citizens are not even given the same rights as those who are here without a right to be here. I have no objection to someone coming from Mexico to obtain employment to better their life. I do object to them coming by sneaking in the back door when others from Mexico have followed the structures set out to allow them to work and live here.

I do have objections to the idea that they should be afforded more rights then I have. That they should be given assistance when americans who are in just as desperate a need cannot have it. Or that we should overlook that they broke our laws to arrive here. I do object to the idea that our tax dollars as well as often the social security money that is running short is use to fund health care for illeagal imigrants.

I have looked this up and in all reality we would not be treated the same if we crossed the border into Mexico without following the proper protocal. In fact many of us in middle class status would not be able to afford to reside in Mexico as it's immigration laws are extremely severe. The center for security policy ( which can be found by just typing Mexico's immigration laws into yahoo search engine) gives complete documentation of what it would take for us to imigrate to Mexico.

I am not trying to be cold or uncaring of thier plight, I just do not feel it is fair to offer others perks and care that we ourselves cannot obtain.

Also another little known fact,there is a company that builds homes for people here in America,..if you are American,..you have to get a back-ground check,credit check, and have 15% down-And yes,..it comes w/ an almost 75% dicount (total price)...Now if your NOT American(legal)your down payment is donated,..you have NO background check,nor credit!...There are MANY ways American's get screwed in America,...the only way to stop it is if AMERICANS do something--..And I could only WISH for free dental & eye care for my children!!!.;o(....And it's NOT anyone's right to get FREE health care,...America should NOT be paying the bill for those who sneak into this country....but all this soon will end. Sometime soon a local number for major American city's will be sent out on flyer's (in the mail)to report to I.C.E any undocumented workers or renter's...and to report people who KNOWINGLY help in any way . The INS makes very sure that only a certain number of VISAs are issued every year. The assignment of such is based upon the work force in the USA. The people applying for VISAs must be able to prove that they have professional skills that are in demand in the USA, and that which our own labor pool is lacking. If your husband is not in that category then that is why it has taken so long. This is also why we do not need illegal people coming in. It further delays the process for those that are legally trying to enter. You, of all people, if you really want your husband to be admitted here, should be more against illegal aliens than anyone else.

I now understand why you might be an RN. There is always a shortage of nurses in this country, thus your VISA. I am sorry; I was mistakenly under the impression that you were an American citizen. Now I understand that English is your second language.

We let millions in.....no, you can't stop millions from coming in....so you put brakes on those that sneak in and you allow others to come in freely... Look at the terrorist attacks, then look at who our country is facilitating to enter our borders. Nothing in what you put up is COMPREHENSIVE and FREE denistry. One of them has a SLIDING SCALE, another is LIMITED services by students for a SMALL FEE, and another says your UNION insurance usually covers the costs.
