Before the act of creation that gave humanity a home, before days were numbered and nights were stretched from dusk to dawn, in the infinity before we existed, there was a community of three; the three in one trinity. They were one and yet three and at home with one another. They were the essence of shalom/peace, hesed/lovingkindness and safety. They experienced perfect unity and diversity; they were freedom and form.
In John 17:4 & 5, Jesus describes His relationship with God, "I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began."
Can we imagine this glory that the trinity had before the foundations of the earth? This is our picture of what true community looks like. The definition of trinity is often abstract, difficult to grasp. It is easy to see it as one dimension - flat. And yet, this community within the Trinity is the most basic and dynamic relationship that has existed. Therefore, we must seek to get behind, under, around the picture of the trinitarian relationship because this is exactly what our churches and homes should look like. This glory is what should shine forth to the world proclaiming, Emmanuel: God with Us. This glory defines true community.
What we know about the Godhead is to be gleaned from Genesis to Revelation as the Father with pride and affection talks of the son, of the son as he speaks of his father with the gentle word 'Daddy' and of the spirit as he becomes our comforter. Leonard Boff writes of this community: Father, son and Holy Spirit live in community because of the communion between them. Communion is the experience of love and life (Trinity and Society, Leonardo Boff, Orbis Books, Maryknoll, NY, 10545, 1988).
This is our absolute. In John 17 Jesus tenderly speaks to his intimate Father regarding His love for us. So, as we meditate on what Gods love looks like from within the trinity, so let that guide us to be that perfect community in our relationships, in our the churches.
How do we understand community? It is an offer of our hearts to another, an offer for others to abide with us; the way Emmanuel came to rest with us. God opens His heart to us as He gives Himself to us in His Word and His Spirit. We were all strangers in a strange land and God came into our lives, as a Father, as a co-heir (the son) and His Shalom (spirit). As our trinitarian God is love itself, so that loves flows to us and therefore, that glory should bleed over into our own lives, our own relationships. As the beloved disciple John said, "They will know them by their love."
