Looking for Potty Training Tips

I never had a boy, but maybe if you put a few cheerios in the toilet water for him to aim at, it might turn potty time into a game. My granddaughter is trying to get potty trained and she's three, they do it when they're ready I think.

had two boys. My favorite trick was to put a few cherrios in the toilet and have him try to aim at them. It makes it fun and a game out of going to the potty.

Who would have thougt of cheerios for potty training, but it seems several people have tried it.

Cheerios work for "aiming" but I started mine with sitting first. Make it more fun: turn him backward (take all bottoms off) and tell him to ride the motorcycle. I have tried running water to make him go, pouring water over him, put blue food coloring in to make it turn green. One thing for certain; be consistent. Take him every 5-10 minutes for starters. Then push it to 20, 30 minutes. I now take mine about every 2 hours (and I have been working with him for 3 weeks). Monitor his liquid intake so if he is drinking more take him sooner. Stay with him until he goes. Once he has mastered going every time you take him, have him work on standing and aiming for the water/cheerio. Mine wants to get the cheerio out of the potty. They are for eating, not peeing on, he says! Good luck to you! And I am sure he will be out of diapers by 1st grade. LOL!

I started trying to potty train my son when he was about two but he wasn't really interested. He'd sit on the potty for a few minutes but he usually wouldn't go.

I had some other things going on in my life at the time and wasn't up to the battle, so I stopped making a big deal of it. I left the potty chair set up. Somehow he eventually got the idea by the time he was three.

I don't think you can go too far wrong as long as you aren't two strict or uptight about it. If you punish accidents or make potty training a miserable experience you're more likely to have problems.

My son had a little seat and steps that we put onto the big toilet when he needed to use it. His dad showed him what to do and he learned quickly.

One thing that helped my son (now 3 1/2) get excited about going in the potty was the extremely strong desire for him to wear batman and spiderman underwear! Now the issue is that he is completely potty trained for peeing, but pooping is another story. He actually asks for a diaper! I talked with other moms about this and some of their boys have the same issue. They theorized it had to do with the boys' difficulty transitioning to sitting for pooping. Anyway, that's more info than you requested, but now you know! :)

reading your comments really helps me... right now im dealing twith a 2 yo and my boyfriend and i are trying to potty train him... i admit im not much help because im an hour away in college so when i come home we play and i dont really worry too much about the potty issue. my boyfriend isnt very consistent either. recently i have started a psychology course and they have informed me that it is not okay for your child to end a behavior because of punishment, but they should end it for praise. otherwise it is unhealthy, almost as if the child lives in fear. so with that i wont punish my child for his accidents, im still just waiting for that day where i can praise him for actually using the potty.LOL. i also dont think its a good idea for the child to learn standing up first because then you would have to reteach them to sit down whent he have bowel movements which can become confusing to the child. anyway, my son doesnt really pay attention to the potty he just sees it as an oppurtunity to get naked. hes a nudist LOL.
