The topic of this group is union members. Anyone who has been a member of a union or is a current member is open to join this group. Also if your spouse or your parent was a union member and you have memories and/or experiences to share, please feel free to join the group.

How often do you get pay raises, compare union dues for various unions around the country and more related issues on this topic.
I am a home health care worker with SEIU California. The Governator tried to change our benefits and stop parents and spouses from being healthcare providers for their family members - which was unsuccessful.
Currently the unions in California are trying to unite and I have a ballot I need to vote on after reading and researching more.
Remember that commercial - Look for the union label when you are buying .... If only I could remember the words and exact era this was broadcast.
This is the group to share those experiences and compare the differences of the unions across the country and within various industries. Are you an active member of your union?

As for the political stuff, I think we need to support moderates on both sides of the aisle, and end the hate politics. My Union, the SEIU, is very progressive, and is working to bring all workers Unions into the 21st Century. One thing is for sure, without a Union, the rich and powerful will always have disproportionate representation, and tax laws written with loopholes they can drive trucks (with non-union drivers) through! lol!
Shelly, I'm sorry to hear about your husband and his union not supporting him and the others. Time without full pay is time completely lost, you can't make up the money lost while the contracts are negotiated, that's why we left the union, it's a game to them. Sure, the strike money that we and other people put into the strike fund helps, but it's not full pay. That's just money lost, never to be made up, even with a raise.
I think unions start for a good reason. But, they're all too soon mired down in the quagmire of their own self-service. The only thing discussed seriously at the meetings are what's currently on the union's agenda...and, it's not necessarily what's in the best interest of its members. As you can probably tell, the one I was in left a dark brown taste in my mouth. But, as far as I'm concerned...unions should have term limits or left in place until the original objective is accomplished. And, they never ever have a place in the public services (including healthcare and education.)
