Though not as prevalent in the news in recent years as it has been in the past, the South American cocaine trade is flourishing. Contrary to a lack of public attention cocaine addiction remains on the rise, and violent crimes because of cocaine are still frequent occurences.
The war on drugs is perhaps the most futile and hypocritical campaign in American history. On one hand you have the DEA, and millions of dollars a year going toward stopping and tacking drugs. On the other hand you have the CIA, that needs the cocaine trade to continue in order to protect US interests in South America.
Currently in many South American countries such as Columbia, Peru, and Bolivia, you have a stand off between the corrupt right wing government and left-wing groups. The United States needs these countries to remain capitalist to continue to support our interests. However what is being ignored is that the right wing groups are funded by cocaine.
You stop cocaine, and South America becomes an unfriendly market. Its that simple.
