Many years ago, okay, not that many. Seven years ago I went on a business trip to Hawaii. At the time I worked for a sports cards/collectibles store. There were several of us from the company that went, including the owner, his wife, their son, my husband and me. We were at a conference which included a bunch of the large baseball card companies. Each day and night there were extra events that each company held and invited us to.
One of these was a golf outing which was hosted by one of the biggest companies. They brought 4 STAR retired players to play with their "clients" (ie: US). Well, since my husband and I were only employees we didn't get to play with a star, only got to see them in the clubhouse briefly. I can't remember all 4 players, but I do know that Julius Irving (Dr J) and Gordie Howe were there.
The course was incredible. It was like being in Jurassic Park! Thick, lush foliage, a little damp in the shade. While golfing we got to the middle of the course and saw the snack bar. While my husband was getting food I noticed that there was another cart there with Julius Irving in the passenger seat. I guess I was staring without realizing and he smiled at me and asked me how my game was going. I told him that I had never played before so I wasn't having a great game. He said he wasn't doing well either. As we were talking I had walked over, just to not be rude. After talking golf he said, "I'm Julius, nice to meet you" and then offered a handshake! I introduced myself but I was so flabberghasted that he introduced himself to me! I wondered, are there people that don't know who he is??? Then, of course, someone has to come along and ruin my fun! The representative that was escorting Dr J came back to the cart and gave me a glaring look as if to say "Don't talk to the star!"
That happened to me with Dennis Rodman. I saw him in the airport in Las Vegas and just wanted a photo with him. He looked as if he was about to say yes and whoever he was with said that he was "about to eat" and "no!" My plane was boarding so I couldn't wait. Very dissapointing!
Have you had any experiences meeting a celebrity? How did it go? I've had a few more, but nothing great to speak of.
