Managing Gather

Check email. Article posted on Gather. Image posted on Gather. Click link. Read article. View image. Back to email. Already 20 more Gather email. Oh no!

I don't know about anyone else, but my email inbox has been filled to the brim with Gather emails and I don't know how to manage it. I tried switching from notifications from my network to just group notifications and that made it worse. I switched to image notifications and something else that I can't remember, but that didn't work.

So, now I'm trying to figure out a better way to manage Gather. I don't want to miss out, but I can't handle it all along with regular life, work, etc. What are you doing to manage the Gather mail and articles? How do you keep up with everyone?

I turned off ALL of those notifications (except for groups that I am the owner of) and then subscribe to those people and groups who I really enjoy. When I log on to gather, I go through my groups and read articles there, go through the Articles For Me on my My Gather page to see if something interests me and then check out the main articles listing and wade through those.

I felt like you at first and tried several things, but I realized that I didn't really need the email reminder because I was going to look in those places myself anyway.

I guess it depends on how you use gather and what works for you. Good luck. Keep trying!

Well, I am careful about who I let in as a friend for contacts. If someone writes too much stuff, I remove them. So the only notifications I get are articles written by friends, and activity from the groups I am the owner of.

The people I remove from my friends list either get taken back in as a colleague, or I can subscribe to them, or say someone like Jacob K. I would just browse to their profile and check out their latest articles. In fact I am about to modify a setting because of a certain contact of mine who has a deep seeded need to post recipes..and lots of them. LOL

They aren't BAD recipe's, but there are just soooo many!

If I didn't check my mail several times a day for other things I'd have the same issues. All I can say is check mail often or chage settings, or perhaps get a seperate email for your Gather notifications?

I would keep notifications for connections. Then any groups you are very interestrd in if you have time. If not don't get notifications on any groups.

All my gather messages go to my junk mail box, so I don't really worry about it. I quickly scroll to see what interests me, then I click all messages and delete them, just two clicks of the mouse.

Sorry to say, Petula, there's only one sure-fire way: Get off Gather.

I don't pay any attention to subscriptions. I read some of my massive notifications, and I use various lists and whatever, but the site is addicting and overwhelming.

Petula, I have made this a Feature in the Unofficial Gatherholics group.

Personally, I think it is rude to be connected to people if I am not interested in what they publish or the comments they make to what I have published. The only reason I see for anyone to do so is so that those connections will read what they publish, and that seems like a one-sided, selfish relationship to me.

Well, darn it, Sandy, I read just about every word you type, and even though I told TPTB to notify you every time I booted up, you mean they DON'T (appropriate expression of mixed outrage and horror here!)???? I am INSULTED!!!

I changed my settings to only get notifications from my connections since those are the people that I share interests with. After that I go and check the homepages of the groups I belong to, but I don't get notified of each posting via email. It has helped my mailbox a lot. The other thing I did was to create an email address just for Gather mail so it wouldn't interfere with my real life.

I have turned of notification of articles, but since I don't want to miss pictures I have these turned on. And notification from groups I manage and other gruops of interest.
What I do instead is that I check Articles for me every day and comment on as much as I can.
The reason for doing so was that my mailserver, also sends me an text message notification everytime I receive a mail, so I got it double. That just turned overwhelming.

And Kathryn honestly, I don't think it should be necesary for Petula to quit Gather, just manage it diffently. ;O))) We can't be without anyone here!

Sandy, I think you have a point. It may be "rude" to be connected to people who you aren't interesting in reading, but I can't seem to find the time to read all that I'm interested in!

Kathryn, Thanks! Oh, I don't think I could stand to miss out on Gather, but you do have a point.

I would only subscribe to the groups you truly enjoy and contribute to. It doesn't take long to scroll down and read the first sentence of those articles to decide: delete or read. That said, gather is addictive ;-

Pick and choose what is really important to you, then shut the rest off.

I only get an email if someone sends me a mesasge or posts to a group I own. I shut all the rest off.
