I started with pacbell back in December of 2000 and then a few years later it went to SBC Yahoo. Around that time my Outlook Express bombed and I integrated my email acct into a yahoo acct. This is on dial up. Now it is worse than ever with AT&T.
In 1.5 hour time period I had disconnects constantly and one time IE had to close. Since August I am lucky to get one hour full time online without incident.
I have more access numbers and have used them, but I keep one number on the dial up box and just input new ones as I get disconnected, but most often I need to reboot.
Calling AT&T is not a solution, as the calls go to India with the people reading the responses like it is a script. I spent 45 minutes with one guy that had me delete some useless SBC stuff on my computer, but it did not get any better.
Now that Time Warner Cable has taken over Adelphia I have another option to get their Road Runner internet service - not sure the exact name of this, but I read reviews on www.epinions.com and many glowing reports of this being the best ISP.
I called them up and learned a technician would come and take care of it all at no extra cost. My issue now is changing my email acct that I have given out to many organizations and signed up for services and sites with.
I need to know what the steps are to make this a smooth transition from others that have changed ISPs. I am not going to get a new set of business cards from Vista Print, like I did after chaning my phone number earlier this year.
What do I do with the thousands of messages in my pacbell acct, how can I make changes before getting the new service? Do others keep the old ISP for another month just to keep the email acct? I was thinking of doing that, but than thought I could open up another yahoo acct and start transferring all them to there to get prepared for this.
Anyone with Road Runner have any tips or guidelines on how the service works and how many email accts you can have?
Will Internet Explorer 6.0 still have errors while on Road Runner? Is there something I can download to stop these errors that happen almost daily?
I still have half of a CD stuck inside my computer somewhere and have received the replacement CD but cannot get the compartment to close so a CD could be utilized..
I hate this stinking computer, slow dial up, crappy Gateway junk. My mouse broke recently so I got a new one at Staples and this one plugs into the computer instead of the keyboard and now when I am about to lose a connection I cannot finish reading a page as it will not scroll.
Can it get any worse than this? Is Road Runner the answer to these slow problems? Tips and ideas on this transition would be appreciated.

I cannot necessarily offer you any advice on your dial-up situation (although AOL [Gasp!] is now offering some free services). However, I would strongly urge you to go with an ISP independent email account (Yahoo, HotMail, Gmail). This eliminates the need to change your email address when changing your ISP.
Would you like me to research the Time-Warner Road Runner service for you "Ya Bonnie Lass"? :)
If so, then you should be able to keep your existing email address(es) without issue.
Road Runner is definitely the best service out there. Very efficient and fast.
I also recommend GMAIL. It's an excellent email service, that's independent of any ISPs. It has such a large storage space, that you will not have to delete any emails for some time.
What I would do is, I'd sign up for an internet email account (Gmail). Then I'd forward all emails in my old account (in your case, Pacbell), to my new address. While I'm forwarding EACH email, I'd go through each of them, and change my registration info, or send a reply to the sender, notifying them of my new address.

It's not a bad idea to keep the old isp for a month if you have an email account there.
I always use a free email account for ordering stuff and so forth and try to keep my "real" account for friends and family.
It might be less hassle to replace the cd drive--they're incredibly cheap now--than to try to pry the door open. If it were mine I'd say to myself--"It's useless now. If I break it trying to open it I'm no worse off than when I started." It's a white lie but it's comforting.
Mark - sounds good if you want to do some research. I also have a gmail account but hardly use it. Some of my yahoo groups go there. I own yahoo groups and have a hard time accessing them as the emails come to my pabell acct but I need to sign into a yahoo acct to access them, which means closing one yahoo (pacbell) to get to the other yahoo.
Maybe there is a way I can get the outlook express to work again, or would that be available with road runner and what do I do if that is still not usable?
Confusing to me, probably others too. Thanks Carol I will check out that site now.
I have a freind who has cable internet and not only is she paying 49.95 a month, but when we gt online together I can get to websites faster than she can. Everyone I know who has cable internet has trouble with it, it's always going out, several of my friends have switched from cable to AT&T's DSL.
You will be able to create a brand new e-mail account when you get your road runner service installed. More than likely they will tell you what your starting/master account is and from there they should allow you to create additional email accounts with whatever you would like. Then set up your outlook express for this new account.
Once you have a brand new email account you c an go to all of your groups and what-not and change the e-mail address to your new one as needed.
If these are free e-mail accounts you access through a webpage, I would keep them just as is. I use most of my webmail accounts for junkmail. Whenever a website asks for an email account they either get my yahoo account or they get my.junk.mail@comcast.net LOL.
What do you mean, you access your isp email account with yahoo?? You mean your isp email address is set to be automatically forwarded to your yahoo email address? I'm a little confused on that.
BUT, for simplicity sake, I would just setup your new email address from your new ISP, and only use it for friends and family and personal contacts. Use the gmail and yahoo accounts for crap. Just about anything that is setup to go to your gmail or yahoo accounts should be able to go to the new isp email.
I'm exhausted, I hope that made sense. :)
We have roadrunner in our area but my friends changed to DSL because it is cheaper.
