Jake's NFL Picks -- Week 2

So I went 11/16 last week.  Not bad.

Stories from last week's games:

1.  The Packers suck.

2.  The Raiders suck more.

3.  Daunte Culpepper (Miami) might suck.

4.  Drew Bledsoe (Dallas) is already feeling backup QB Tony Romo threatening to steal his job.

5.  A linebacker can send a QB to the hospital with a severe concussion and not get a penalty (Trent Green, Kansas City).  Actually, it did look like a clean hit.

6.  Fox has even more stupid/annoying buzzing and whirring sound effects built into their broadcasts than they did last year.  On the plus side, they still have the best pre-game show.

7.  The ESPN Monday Night team is on-camera way, way, way too much.  More replays, please.

Random Observation:

The fact thatESPN kept showing Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes sitting in the owner's suite at the Redskins/Vikings game bugged me.  Tom looked annoyed and annoying.  Katie looked pretty and unhappy.  Suri was nowhere in sight.

So . . . On to Week 2 in the NFL

Obviously, it's very early in the season.  Still, nobody wants to start out 0-2.  That makes this weekend's games important for teams that thought they would be contenders this year, such as Miami and Carolina, both of which lost last weekend.

Newsflash to Patriots fans -- the Pats don't look nearly as tough as they used to.  Now that they've lost actually lost star WR Deion Branch (who signed with Seattle this week), somebody's gonna have to step it up a bit on the offensive side.  I'm not counting them out and I still expect them to win their division (mainly because I don't think Miami will turn out to be much of a threat), but . . . all good things come to an end.

Here are my picks for week 2:

SUN, SEP 17

Carolina at Minnesota = Minnesota

Buffalo at Miami = Miami

NY Giants at Philadelphia = Giants

New Orleans at Green Bay = New Orleans 

Houston at Indianapolis = Indianapolis

Detroit at Chicago = Chicago

Cleveland at Cincinnati = Cincinnati

Tampa Bay at Atlanta = Atlanta

Oakland at Baltimore = Baltimore

Arizona at Seattle = Seattle

St. Louis at San Francisco  = St. Louis

Tennessee at San Diego = San Diego

New England at NY Jets = New England

Kansas City at Denver = Denver

Washington at Dallas = Dallas

Pittsburgh at Jacksonville = Jacksonville

Ah . . . Daniel, you have no faith in my Vikings. I might pick the Panthers if Steve Smith was healthy. Even if he plays, he'll be slowed. 2 bum hamstrings is a bad deal for a WR and the Vikings Secondary is pretty tough these days, enhanced by decent pressure from a healthy and talented front 4. Should be a decent game.

Giants looked strong against Indy last weekend. Eagles looking good against Houston doesn't impress me much. Also should be a good game.

49'er over the Rams? Really? 49'ers over anybody? 49'ers versus Raiders or Pack might be a good game. 49'ers RB Frank Gore is good, evidently.

Marianne, Pittsburgh is the safe pick for that game but I didn't think they looked all that great last weekend. If Roethlisberger plays, they probably should win but I'm sticking with Jacksonville at home.

I know my beloved Packers are bad but at least were not the Raiders. The Raiders will be shutout once more this week. With the 1st pick in the 2007 Draft the Oakland Raiders select...

Jonathan, the idea of the Raiders having to go into Baltimore almost makes you feel sorry for the Raiders and their fans. Almost.

not to rag but picking straight winners isnt exactly the hardest thing to do. pick using the vegas spread, will make things more interesting. cause lets be honest there are at least 4 mismatches on there that are guaranteed wins for you. so youre looking at worst at a 4/16 week. ill try to get my picks using the spread up tomorrow night.

Go for it Kevin. I'm happy enough picking straight up and, if you think it's so easy, I'd be happy to challenge you over the course of the season. Vegas spreads don't mean that much to me. They're driven as much by mathematical equations (to even the betting out to a point where the house is protected) as much as anything else.

I don't think there's any "might" about it. The dude sucks. He looked like he was throwing the game. It was painful to watch. I'm baffled as to how this guy has the career passer and completion rating that he has. Just chucking it to Randy Moss?

Kat, I warned you about Daunte. Or at least I think it was you. I warned some poor Miami fan.

What's really weird is that all the talking head "football experts" think that Daunte is actually really good and just isn't playing up to his normal standards.

Well, prior to his departure to Miami I have watched (literally) 99 point something percent of every snap he has ever taken in the NFL and I can tell you (sorry to say) that what you've seen in the past couple of weeks in Miami is the real Daunte.

No poise, no calmness under fire, no ability to read defenses and very poor decision making. He may be hindered a little bit by his Knee but that's not much of what's wrong with him.

If given a perfect situation (good running game, strong line, talented receivers), such as he had with the Vikings early in his career, he can be good. But absent that, he is mediocre at best and, I would say, a liability due to his frequent turnovers and the fact that he takes tons of sacks that he should not take (i.e., get rid of the damn ball).

You went 2 for 2 with my local teams, but I'm more of a Giants fan. I had changed the channel to Yan Can Quick, when Anna, who hates football, suggested I check the score. I said "the Giants don't deserve to be called 'my team,' and they ought to think of getting rid of..." as I switched the channel. Lo and behold! The Giants were only 3 points behind! I'm sorry I switched channels, but it got Anna into the remainder of the game, which was an unexpected bonus. Plus, she doesn't like it when I yell curses at the TV, something I don't do when they're playing well. If they keep winning, we'll both be happy. Realistically, they're not the best team in the league, but have potential this year.

I wish I had caught these posts earlier, but I'll keep checking to comment before the games. You know your stuff, that's for sure. Thanks for this!

Yup, it was me that you warned, and I was definitely skeptical when they acquired him as I noticed his fumbling and sack issues in the Viking games I've watched. His career stats are highly deceiving. I wish they would have gone with Drew Brees instead when they had the choice. Now I wish they would put Joey Harrington in. I'm skeptical about him too, but it can't get any worse.

This football season is starting out to be really depressing . . . the Canes suck, the Buffaloes suck worse, the Broncos suck and the Dolphins have been miserable.

Sorry to say but Joey Harrington sucks pretty bad, too.

Dolphins are hosed unless Daunte can get his act together. I wouldn't hold my breath.

So where's week 3? I wanna see if we're gonna lose again. (Titans) , At least we're setting records for losing now, so I've decided that if we start winning I'm gonna be mad. Losing seems to be our strong point.

Bad as I hate to say it, I think it's time for Jeff Fisher to move on.
