Thanks for the comment. Like most Californian's, I've watched these little guys and their startled flights for most of my life, admiring their ebony topknot--but it just registered that a perfect quarter note quivers over their forehead. Ok, so I'm slow.
Scared the tar out of me, actually. I was just taking an early evening walk when they exploded from some manzanitas. It was when they landed I made the connection between their topknot and the quarter note.
Very acute observation in this haiku, which reminds us of the family resemblance of different types of birds as well as our human disgust for one species and the upraising of another as our state bird.

I know what you mean, John. Biases exist in so many places, and they can creep in so innocently. I'm on the lookout . . .
They really are beautiful, Mark. They're on the ground more than in the air; but they sure make a ruckus when they flush.
